Is television really dire at the moment or is it just me?

I feel the BBC has deteriorated significantly and spends too much money and time trying to compete with the dross served up by ITV.

With a bit of effort though there is plenty of quality TV to be found on iPlayer and Netflix. Foreign dramas are often very good and entertaining but one does have to accept sub-titles.

I like to watch good TV my wife just likes to have it on which drives me demented.

Hopefully if we are ever free from Covid restrictions, the decent actors will get back to filming and we will hopefully get some new series at some point. I only really like crime, thriller, pathology type stuff along with good nature and wildlife programmes.

Highlight of the week for me is Only Connect. Only other things i watch are Eurosport and BBC ALBA I don’t speak Gaelic but programmes especially music are right up my street.
I am subscribed to a number of YouTube channels who can produce more entertainment for me than most TV programmes. Recent discovery for me are the Beard Brothers Check them out.

If I was having a new house built, the last thing I would be doing is complaining about what’s on TV.......

you got a workshop to clean and prepare for removal boxes, im guessing there’s lots of sweeping, cleaning tidying, snagging lists to be made......I could go on

You've got point - if OP's house isn't yet liveable, but if he wan't something to do, I'd be planning and starting on the workshop - I guess it's a shell at the moment, which is what the builders will leave you - get thinking about benches, get making them, and then the leccy can put your sockets in where you need them.

I always find Eorpa interesting tho' I do not speak gaelic. The sub titles are adequate but a bit strange when they translate from some foreign language into gaelic and then english sub title.
There was a cycling bit with two sisters but the sub titles made it seem a bit stilted.

I turn on the telly. Look to see whats coming up and....go to YouTube. Struggling to find anything I like on terrestrial channels.
With the obvious exception of Sunday night's triple episodes of hello hello. Genius

I’d be there every day if retired with saw, timber........get my shelving measured up, marking my leccy pts, so much can be done, I certainly wouldn’t be bored.

hell I’ve been in lockdown for next 9mths as my partner is a shielded and I’m working from home. Not been remotely bored as there is so much than can be done in houses........built bbq shaq, new decking for hot tub, garden planters, home office, the list is endless

Agreed. Only Connect is a diamond in a sea of dross. VCM is a breath of fresh air.

I'm truly surprised that the BBC funds it, though. A programme featuring clever people and a clever presenter asking hard questions which most people won't get?* When the rest of the BBC seems to be chasing ratings in a downward competitive spiral with the commercial channels, I'm astonished it is allowed to exist.

* See also University Challenge. The very name implies privilege and elitism. I'm surprised this hasn't been dumbed down as well. Perhaps 'Local Sixth Form Colleges Answering Questions on Noughties Pop As If It's Something Important'.

We have been watching recorded episodes of the Armstrong Lie. However you feel about him it's interesting viewing.

Just sat down with my best mate and watched two soppy Xmas movies and drank a bottle and more of wine, perfect.

TV is better now than it has ever been. You've got about half a dozen free to air channels showing movies from old classics to modern releases, channels specialising in history, documentaries, sport, news etc etc.

Anyone who thinks it was better back in the old days should google some old TV listings from years ago, then you'll know what "Dire" means.
