Can a hypothesis be true? Wouldn't it stop being a hypothesis if it were shown to be true? Not that I have the slightest idea what Riemann said, did, or wore on a holiday weekend.

Yes it can be true and yes it would stop being a hypothesis if "proven". Glad to have helped you with that ^_^

Unfortunately I'm going to take the following stance: If it's been unsolved, unproven, disproved or otherwise for so long then I'm not going to lose sleep over it.
I got 2 paragraphs down the Wiki page when I realised that I'm better at just about any else than I am at maths.
I've always said that I went into programming because the computer would do the nasty sums for me!

Ok, I'm having trouble with this one. Can you know it's true before it's proven (in which case it's no longer a hypothesis)?

(I feel it's only fair to mention at this stage that my mathematics studies stopped with a grade E at GCE)

You could easily be making sense and the wine is clouding my radar, but...
Correct, you cannot "know" it is true before it is proven and yes, once it is proven it is no longer a hypothesis but becomes a theorum. The poll I suppose should read "do you think that the Riemann Hypothesis will one day be proven". Would that have been better (I suppose so)?

No idea, to tell the truth. However, having drunk a bottle of wine tonight, I think I've proved the validity of booze.

Bearing in mind that the first 10 billion zeros are on the critical line it seems likely that is is true.

I should just like to add that the previous statement means absolutely nothing to me.

If you know it's true before it's proven, then it's a belief, not a hypothesis. Or at least, that's my belief:unsure:. And I understand every single bit of the hypothesis, but don't want to explain it to you, as it would take up far too much of my valuable time. I'd rather teach monkeys the choral basics of Gregorian Chanting. Thank you.

Actually, I looked at

and thought, "there's someone who can't spell"

I like Gregorian Chanting.
It's not as fun as Tchaikovsky, or as sexy as Kylie Minogue (let's face it - That's a gorgeous bum!! ) , but it's in there!
