What do you think about this, possibly the most important unsolved problem in mathematics today.
Yes it can be true and yes it would stop being a hypothesis if "proven". Glad to have helped you with thatCan a hypothesis be true? Wouldn't it stop being a hypothesis if it were shown to be true? Not that I have the slightest idea what Riemann said, did, or wore on a holiday weekend.
"If it's been unsolved, unproven, disproved or otherwise for so long then I'm not going to lose sleep over it"Unfortunately I'm going to take the following stance: If it's been unsolved, unproven, disproved or otherwise for so long then I'm not going to lose sleep over it.
I got 2 paragraphs down the Wiki page when I realised that I'm better at just about any else than I am at maths.
I've always said that I went into programming because the computer would do the nasty sums for me!

You could easily be making sense and the wine is clouding my radar, but...Ok, I'm having trouble with this one. Can you know it's true before it's proven (in which case it's no longer a hypothesis)?
(I feel it's only fair to mention at this stage that my mathematics studies stopped with a grade E at GCE)

Correct, you cannot "know" it is true before it is proven and yes, once it is proven it is no longer a hypothesis but becomes a theorum. The poll I suppose should read "do you think that the Riemann Hypothesis will one day be proven". Would that have been better (I suppose so)?

I've had beer this evening. How can you ask a question like this?![]()
If you know it's true before it's proven, then it's a belief, not a hypothesis. Or at least, that's my belief. And I understand every single bit of the hypothesis, but don't want to explain it to you, as it would take up far too much of my valuable time. I'd rather teach monkeys the choral basics of Gregorian Chanting. Thank you.
Actually, I looked at
and thought, "there's someone who can't spell"![]()
Beer may help answer it though.
