Something to keep you busy in bad weather and quiet times in the future - decide to make all your own decorations for next year. First you need to collect your pine cones/walnut shells/wooden slices/other junk, then you need to gather together the paint, glue, glitter, ribbons etc.

Now you must buy the tools you need - paintbrushes, drills, hooks, clamps etc - and set up a workspace in your home.

You will then need a few afternoons off to search youtube for demos of 'how' and 'what' to make. Once you've made that decision, you can get started - after you've received the extra tools and equipment you had to send for on the recommendation of the you-tuber you favoured.

By now it's already nearly halfway through December and there aren't many afternoons left to get your decorations done. Those you made initially, as trial runs a couple of months ago, have long since been claimed by your friends Vicky, Julie and others, who remarked on how 'charming' they were and how 'clever' you are, and told others. Those you made in November for Beryl, who Vicky told to ask you, and who has a fund-raising stall for the homeless at all the most popular Christmas craft fairs locally, have sold out and Beryl wants to know if you can please make some more - any sort - for next week's fair.

So as your own tree is standing naked in all its glory, you dash out, buy a box of 100 assorted baubles, throw them at the tree, hanging them wherever they land - then sit down with paintbrush, pebbles and pinecones to keep Beryl happy ...

Moral of the story? Never let yourself be seen handling glitter and glue. Hang the baubles up any old how and be done with it.
The above is a true story from a few years ago; names changed to protect those who claim to be innocent ...
