Oh, and is there a finer taste than Guernsey butter? - I was heaping it on a fresh crusty loaf yesterday, I could feel my arteries hardening with all the goodness. Yum.

Agreed, basil smells catty. You can't beat fresh coffee and freshly-baked bread. I work in the fragrance industry and good synthetic versions of these and the smell of a new car are the perfumer's holy grail; no perfumer has succeeded in replicating them well enough to be indistinguishable from the real thing.

One of my favourite smells is the scent of lavender in the air on a summer's evening, whilst sitting the the garden after the ride home. Though my favourite smell has to be fish and chips +vinegar

I agree that basil smells of cat pee.

I was told, fresh coriander has a whiff of bedbugs. Not having much experience of the latter , I can only speculate. But I like the scent, and that goes for all the fresh herbs that have been mentioned.

While out on a ride in early spring, I love to try and pick up the scent of sweet violets if I see any, but it's usually faint and elusive. So if you see some weirdo, bike nearby, knelt down by the verge, face apparently buried in a grassy bank, in March, it could be me...
