Thanks all. To answer this question, I hit the arrow (mine's white on blue, but it looks like that) in the middle of the map, but no voice. Maybe it's because I'm only trying it out from the sofa, and it would start talking to me if I actually started?
Yes. I suggest you try it out on a walk to your local shops. It is also free, the voice is perfectly pleasant and comprehensible and it only needs data access at the start of the journey, for route finding.

Why not just turn on the voice in Google Maps/Navigation? It's in the menus or settings somewhere self-explanatory.

I couldn't find it. Googling suggested turning on Google text to speech, but I already had, and I still didn't get a voice. Anyway, I'm grappling with Osmand right now, because the idea of using offline maps is appealing. If I can get it to work properly, it sounds like it might be the perfect solution.
