Is there a shim to convert a 31.8mm front mech clamp for use on a 28.6mm tube?

I was looking for a shim to reduce a Campag mech from 35 to 31.8mm, and found the link up there to the SJS site: http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/wheels-m...-front-derailleur-shim-prod18555/?src=froogle
(OK I know it's not the correct size). But are they serious: £17.99 for a bit of bent metal?

If everybody calls them that then I think there is an argument for their existence. Consensus is how we arrive at the usage of words. If it gets used enough and put into print there's a good chance the O.E.D. will include it in their publication as a perfectly cromulent word. Would you rather be French with their Acadame Francaise or whatever they call it?
If they've not got a vernier on them they can't really be vernier callipers can they?

the latest moore & wright ones can display fractions, as do some cheapy ones - whilst you and i both can do .25 or .625 easily enough not sure I'd spot 11 /64" without working it out

Truth be told, I dont think many people actually know what a vernier is.

until pointed out above I'd not made the logical deduction that digital (vernier) callipers wouldn't be verniers (as well) - though now I think about it, my digital height gauge doesn't have a vernier.

Anyway, fascinating though this discussion on the correct nomenclature of yon calliper thingies seems to be, I hope you don't mind me interrupting by saying you'll all be delighted to know that I've solved my problem.

Decimated means to reduce by 1/ 10th but is commonly used to mean all but destroyed. Stuff changes innit.
