Is there anything that's NOT made in China?

I work in the manufacturing industry in toolmaking. TBH, I don't want anything we make to be exported to China.
We are streets ahead in terms of manufacturing quality and design of what our European customers have received from companies doing the same as us who are operating in China.
The bottom line is that if a toolmaker does their job properly then the finished product which it produces will be of the same quality and be salable (sp) on the world markets, which in turn jeopardises jobs back in the UK of our UK customers.

The government should be helping investment in manufacturing facilities in the UK so we can regain our position of a small, but substantially better producer of quality goods.

Maggie and all subsequent government chose the easy option when they stated that we could rely on the banking industry to support us. Now the banks are moving to India (talking to their call centres are a joke) and manufacturing has all but gone to the far east - oh and the bankers have proven themselves to be totally self serving self-gratification artists who have stitched up the UK with their greed and incompetence ;)

The problem is if the government allow manufacturing to fail in the UK, all of the skills in this sector we have to service our home markets and those on the continent will just be lost

I'm just starting a little website about SIDI cycling shoes and I can tell you that they are still designed and manufactured in Italy. I must confess that I was surprised to discover that, but I suppose the Italian connection is a strong part of their brand image. "Quality Italian cycling shoes hand made in China" wouldn't sound quite right would it?

I'm pretty sure that your Global titanium MTB frame would be manufactured in China!

The scary thing about the Chinese taking over all the manufacturing jobs is that the goods they produce will only remain cheaper than they would be if manufactured in Europe as long as Chinese workers are paid much lower wages than here. Once the Chinese population can afford to buy their own products in vast numbers why bother shipping the stuff over here unless high prices justify it? I paid a month's wages for my first colour TV. Perhaps high prices for manufactured goods are not gone for ever after all!

High Voltage Power Inductors.

I run the team that makes them in the UK for use in AC/DC converters for HV Power Transmission. Our customer builds DC power transmission lines and we do parts of the converters for them. In order to get the Three Gorges project in China our customer had to put half the manufacturing in China - by government order. Now the plant is in, but the Three Gorges guys refuse to contemplate using China made parts because they know they will be crap, and will only take the stuff I make.

So the plant in China is left with supplying parts for US projects, to date they are about £1M behind in orders and the quality of the component parts made in China are so bad they are having to buy from our UK suppliers though us. The guy they've put in charge of production in China (my counterpart) was sent over here a few weeks ago to try to learn from me. He is a nice enough bloke with a degree - a degree in geology, and he knows F all about electrical systems.

Throughout industry I'm hearing similar anecdotes, China has expanded so fast they have run out of talent and new ventures are failing all over.

I'm pretty sure Craig at Ride On was getting the frames made in Eastern Europe - I thought it was Czech Republic. Maybe Lithuania.

On quality, you should see the numbers of raw material deliveries we reject that come from China and India. We check them with gas chromatography and we find about 15% of incoming batches to be adulterated.

The problem is they are paying peanuts over there and expecting skills which have taken half a lifetime in industry to acquire in the west. One of our customers was getting profile drawings done by one of their subsidiaries in China. I've not seen one in about 6 months now which is just as well because we found so many mistakes in the geometry that we had to go back loads of times to try and get them resolved. We find the same problem with a Nigerian customer as well - real back of the fag packet stuff, and a prize pain in the arse to sort xx( The language barrier is a real problem as well!
