I transferred music from cd on to a windows laptop and then to an iPod touch. Cannot get anything to go on to my iphone7plus unless downloaded from iTunes. Apple seem to be very obstructive for anything they do not make money on.

check that your windoze hasn't ripped the CD into WMAs rather than MP3s

Some iTunes has kittens if asked to assimilate WMA music files; MP3 is usually easier to digest

You are not forced to use iTunes, just google iTunes alternatives and there’s plenty. Or just use Spotify and break free.

I managed to sort this after all the crying that I did. I found a guide how to use Itunes that was easy to follow. Its something that isn't totally straight forward, but I have sussed it now. I still think it should be easier, but obviously they don't really want people to not subscribe..
