A few leaves on it now. Beautiful blossom years ago, two maybe three?
One budding apple. Not fruited properly in longer.

Yes, there are 3 branches at the bottom that need to come off. Cut close to the trunk and parallel to it so the cut is vertical and it'll callous over. Then thin out the higher branches too.

I would start again with a new tree in a different spot. You can't polish a turd (even with 30 years of horticultural experience!).

The bark looks like it's been scraped off at the base, don't know if that means anything.

It was lovely in its day; beautiful blossom and - I think - russet apples, were delicious.
