Is this what spinning classes are like?

I have ridden fixed on 45 min commutes and it's nothing like

Don't get me wrong, I love proper cycling, but spinning is a very different beast and as indicated by some of the folks above, I believe can be beneficial to proper cycling.

As with most things in life - don't knock it until you have tried it

I've tried spinning a couple of times but just don't like it, same with yoga. It's taught me that a fixed bike is not for me

Yoga taught you that a fixed bike is not for you?

did you mean Yoda? "fixed bike, for you is not."

have never understood the use of spinning bikes why noy just get out and ride a proper bike on proper roads
I did spin for around 2 years, lost around 2 stone and found it perfect as It put me "in the gym" and allowed me to then use the other facilities to cross train (something i don't get from riding).

I would spin then do weights and then swim, 3 times a week. I worked 2 miles from my home so wouldn't have got anywhere near the same amount of exercise by riding to work and wouldn't have had access to the other disciplines.

So the gym does work well for some people and should't be ignored or knocked.

Incidentally, I've been riding 20 miles (40 a day) for over 4 years now, 2-3 days a week most weeks and have not lost any significant weight, nor changed my body shape.

Two years of cross training in the gym and I looked totally different.

that all said, riding on the road is nothing like spin and I would always rather ride than spin... but at the time, it was perfect for me and really worked well.

Yes, the first cpl of lessons is like Hell. Then is becomes bearable, and then fun! I would encourage anybody to give it a go a few times, if you are able  I really miss spinning but had to quit the gym (too expensive).
+1 I could no longer justify the £80 a month if I was riding (and spending thousands on bike stuff at the time) so dropped it too.

I really miss the ability to just go for a swim and do weights in air conditioned, relatively kid free and comfortable surrounding. My local sports centre isn't that appealing.

I really need to cross train again so may talk myself into rejoining someday soon.

Yep the bikes at my gym all have SPD's. I normally cycle to the gym, 45 min spin class and then cycle to work. The best of both worlds

Wow! Sounds much better than my old gym (s***ness First).
Certainly is "F*tness Unit" on Felixstowe road. All class based so you really push yourself and £ 35 a month (any class between 7 and 1) I go every morning before work and every day is different Circuits, Weights, Cross Training, Spin, Boxfit. And you get coffee afterwards, tidy

Alas I start work at 8am and most of the time spent before work is used to herd the child!

I always cycle to spin classes too. And often take the long way home - makes for a perfect warm down.

Yep certainly helps when the kids are older. Felixstowe road is ideal as well for me as it is approx 1/2 way to work hence why you see on my Strava rides I have done 2 before 9

As at least 90% of my enjoyment from cycling comes from enjoying the scenery and countryside, I have little desire to ride a bike while looking at a wall.

I get to look in the mirror^_^
If you go to a good class with a good instructor it can really aid your cycling and be a lot of fun, if they make you do press ups and wave your arms about then leave.

I've just joined our local gym - we've been lucky with a brand new £8m council owned development, just half a mile from my house. Maybe I should have added the 'classes' add on to the membership. £20 a month for gym, or an extra £5 for classes as well.
