Purveyor of fine nonsense
... idiots don't shout when we overtake them (but not the other way around)?

I sometimes get shouted at incomprehesibly or have things thrown at me by chavs when they overtake me.

But just today I was riding home down the outside of a huge (and I do mean absolutely huge) traffic jam at rush hour - totally solid for about five miles due to some sort of burst whatnot en-route (lots of maintenance vans and people digging up the road, as it turned out) - and not one single driver said a word to me, nor did anyone throw anything at me, despite the fact that I passed a fair number of chavmobiles sat there, motionless, with their engines running and dance music on full volume.

Now isn't that just the strangest thing ever?

Don't you just hate traffic jams when you're on the bike

Sounds similar to an incident yesterday. A "P" plated (recently-passed learner) car pulled out from a T-junction right along side me and I sounded by horn to get her to notice me. Fortunately she swerved back and missed me. The car behind me, when he passed, shouted "she's just a learner!". Surely having recently passed your test doesn't excuse you from careless driving? It's odd how people take sides of people at fault...

Why didn't you shouut "wheerdlebourghhhhh" at them as you hurtled past?

Oh a regular Oscar Wilde your are [/sarcasm]

Any man of sophistication knows that far greater levels of deep cutting sophistication can be had by shouting "nyeeeeaarrglfliffff" or "jablooogabragahh".

Of of course one could stop and inquire "Excuse me, would you mind awfully vacating the Queen's Highway, the friend of Dorothy that you are?"

Not really, their brains can't handle cyclist travelling faster than a car & they are trying to compute " I'm being overtaken by a cyclist" as you pass & it's only latter that they realise they should have yelled abuse at you etc.

There's a spot on my commute where traffic tends to build up towards some traffic lights, that I turn right at. I tend to overtake when traffic is moving slow or stopped so I am in the right position to turn right. I generally have little hassle doing this (even some drivers moving to the left for me) but invariably there's the odd one that shouts something along the lines of "Que jumper!" etc. I'm not too bothered about the shouters it's the gits who see me coming and move over the centre line to try and stop me passing, WHY??? It tends to be the same drivers that have overtaken, often dangerously, just before the traffic and don't seem to like the fact that I aren't stopping behind them!!!

I wonder if motorists talk about us in the same way....endlessly day after day on a sad motoring forum somewhere on the interweb.:hello:

I get the same kind of thing when I'm on my motorcycle...

When I filter, mainly on the A1 at rush hour, a high percentage of motorists will move over to allow me past but some don't seem to like the idea of me getting past and actively move in my way, causing me either to swerve or slow down/stop.

Whilst commuting on my cycle, I've had very little trouble with cars. I did 'hold up' a car for about 5 seconds (by not using the awful shared cycle lane or riding in the gutter) and then we he screamed past shouted ''A**eh*le'' at me... suffice to say he got caught in traffic 100yrds down the road and I went merrily past him.

the reply to that is simply "she just learnt"

Was it Andrew Sachs (aka Manuel of Fawlty Towers)?

I've never had anything thrown at me but had a few "aaaaeighgghghts ieeghsgs" shouted at me.

Also a few incidents of chavs jumping in front of me for a laugh with their mates. I'm not sure why they find it funny because the one time that they do get too close my knee to their groin at 20mph is going to hurt.
