As far as I can tell from the HC excerpt, in situations where it's legal to overtake, you can straddle or completely cross the solid line.It is legal to overtake on a solid white line provided you don't cross over it

Safe? Maybe... technically you could... but you would be very close to crossing the double white lines if you gave the appropriate overtake distances to the vehicles ahead.
But what reason would be neccessary to overtake on the area of white stripes in "normal" traffic conditions?
Personally, I think that is a rather crappy road design

Double white lines where the line nearest you is solid. This means you MUST NOT cross or straddle it unless it is safe and you need to enter adjoining premises or a side road. You may cross the line if necessary, provided the road is clear, to pass a stationary vehicle, or overtake a pedal cycle, horse or road maintenance vehicle, if they are travelling at 10 mph (16 km/h) or less.

Areas of white diagonal stripes or chevrons painted on the road. These are to separate traffic lanes or to protect traffic turning right.

There are a lot of HGV's using that route..HGV's are limited to 40mph on single carriageways...it is a 60mph road...I ride a motorcycle for at least 6 months of the year. I don't need to enter the hatching to get past.
Despite what you think, you can get past another slower moving car with another car without driving illegally (crossing or straddling the hatching at that point. The bigger problem actually comes from cars overtaking further down the road, and crossing the broken lines as they do it by a good margin.
Looking at a road on Google Maps and then riding/walking/driving it in person can be very different, as I find when planning commuting routes.
What looks like a horrible road to ride on Google Maps is actually quite nice to commute on as it is not used as much of a rat run as I thought it would be.
I was thinking car on car and trying to imagine two cars side by side down there, harder to do in that image than in person.

Believe me, it is a horrible road to cycle down. It is actually a bypass for the village of Sedgeberrow. the old road still runs through the village, and I used that to avoid that stertch of road when venturing up there.

sorry to say this - but that will teach you for going up the inside of a vehicle when there is a left turn near
reason being - you wouldnt see his indication to turn left and you might also be in his blindspot and not get seen at all and then squish........and who would you blame?????

I was turning left, too, and I did give him space to turn left in front of me, so all I had to shout about was his useless use of indicators. I didn't really nearly come a cropper, that was hyperbole.

i'm sorry - but i just can't see why you would put yourself in this position and then blame the driver cause you nearly got squished riding up the inside of him. don't ride up the inside and then there is less chance of getting squished. Granted he should have indicated earlierI was doing my impression of a track stand to the lights, which involves wobbling around at around 2mph.
