To be technically accurate Calais was not part of France until the 1580's
It was English for 250 years before that and Flemish or Boulougne before that

I can see the 'liberation' of Calais being a something the the more right wing Kippers will be proposing as a good thing to reunite the country

As I clearly look much healthier and fitter than you no matter where in France I go after a short while I always get called salad as a sign of respect. Or as they pronounce it ....salaud

I thought French was actually only spoken around Paris, with the rest of the country speaking different languages. French was imposed on the rest of the country.

That is correct, the French language was only spoken in the Bassin Parisian , which covers a 70 mile radius round Paris. That is why, where I come from, Orleans, we speak the purest French , with no accent. Other parts of France used to speak their own dialect until Napoleon imposed the French language to be spoken throughout the country. This explain the various accents in many parts of France. Also, just for your information, the inhabitants of Orleans are known as " the dogs of Orleans" . This is in no way derogative. We were called like this by the king of France in the middle ages because people of Orleans were the most faithful to the king.
