The opponents are in N Scotland and N Ireland who, understandably, don't want December sunrise at 10am. But the benefits are tangible and measurable. Fewer people will be killed on the roads and we will release less CO2

There's nothing more miserable than that feeling when the clocks go back in Autumn and it's easily avoidable

My only issue with the clocks forward/back thing is my old pendulum clock... it gets all stroppy and refuses to tick for more than a few minutes after being changed ...but after a few days it gets used to the new regime.

The benefits weren't tangible in the sixties and they aren't now. And if we go to GMT we won't have that miserable feeling either.

There seems to be some evidence that the results were tangible

And the energy saving is real too. The miserable feeling in Autumn is as a result of going back to GMT. If we stay on GMT all year then we will still have that miserable feeling of the dark evenings. BST all the way or BST and double BST in the Summer

The 1970 debate on ending the BST all year experiment can be read on Hansard.
Of particular note is the opinion of Ernle Money, MP for Ipswich. His constituency is the furthest east so should in theory benefit the most from BST in winter, but he said -

My impression from speaking with hon. and right hon. Members on both sides is that there is an overwhelming preponderance in favour of getting rid of the present thoroughly unsatisfactory state of affairs, but from my own county borough I have had indications of a universal preponderance. Every letter I have had has been in favour of going back to the old and happier state of affairs. It may be that this is because we are a major industrial borough, relying for our prosperity on our docks and industry, and our connection with the farming industry around us.

1353 I respectfully submit that any hon. Member is bound to reiterate the arguments that have gone before, because the voice of the nation has spoken so clearly, but in every case I have had there has been reference to the same things—the loss of productivity, the danger, the disadvantage, the increase in accidents, and the sheer tediousness of the present experiment. Indeed, the only members of the population—apart from golfers, who were, I understand, mentioned earlier—who have felt strongly about keeping the present system are those of the criminal profession who specialise in burglary. I understand that the extra hour comes conveniently for them at one end.

ROSPA are a campaigning group, pushing their campaign, if they had their way the Sun wouldn't be allowed to go down until after rush hour finished

What you need to do is get up earlier.

Don't go to bed would be a better idea in that case.
