Which is why id rather use pay as go, that way I know exactly what I'm using and encourages me not to go too mad lol
And why I concluded that 19 degrees was excessive when I actually feel comfortable at 16-18 degrees in the evening, and lower temperatures during the daytime when I am more active.

I've adjusted the fan heater thermostat to switch it off when the room reaches 16.5 degrees. It seems to switch the heater back on at about 16 degrees.

After a valiant effort, the heating went on for an hour last night - just in the living room mind. ;)

Unfortunately, Mrs ND seems to think this means it's open season. :stop:

and you pay a LOT more for your energy. which means you don't put it on when you need it.
when I first got my own place i was on pAYG but i decided that if I put the money in a pot each week I could pay the bills on a monthly/quarterly basis. I got a lot more energy for my money

We have had or thought we had the underfloor on low, thing is it has not been working. Seems the 60 minutes we have the upstairs on from 4.30am has been enough to keep the house warm all day.

That extra insulating I put in when I built the place was it seems money well spent.

When I came downstairs this morning it was about 10 degrees in this room so I put the fan heater on straight away.

I sat here for an hour or so, trying to work out the answer to the Internet Problem (Something is wrong on the Internet - how can we fix it?)

Eventually, it dawned on me that the fan heater on its 1 kW setting was not making much progress in heating the room. The temperature had only risen to 11 degrees after more than an hour. My feet were still cold. In fact the bloody fan heater was less than useless - it felt like it was actually making the feet colder.

I'm a bit of a cheapskate, but clearly 1kW was not enough. I bent down to switch the fan heater to its 2 kW setting and ...

... discovered that I had been blasting my feet with cold air for over an hour!

I was getting annoyed by the racket made by the fan heater anyway so I went out and bought a free-standing 1.2 kW halogen heater to use until the combi-boiler has been repaired. (£15 from TOPS in Tod - bargain!)

I'll use full power on the halogen (and a few minutes of full power on the fan heater) to heat the room in a hurry. Hopefully after that I will get away with 800W or even 400W to maintain a comfortable temperature.

One thing I like about the halogen heater is how bright it is - that will help keep my S.A.D. at bay. For that reason I may even keep using it on the lowest power setting once the CH is working again. (I'll have to shield my eyes when watching TV though because the heater is almost as bright as the set!)

I'm going to look at my fuel tariffs and try to work out how much the halogen costs to run compared to the CH for one room. No point in overheating a house occupied by one person who spends most of his time in just one room.

Well, for the first time I think, our heating went on first thing this morning and is likely to stay on all day.
It's been on and off of course but we often only put it on to take the chill off the house then turn it off again.
Damn virus, coughing my guts up and my lung hurts so that's driven me to turn it on.

Our CH has now been on day and night for months. Probably won't go off until April-ish.

We have an open fire too that maybe sees half a dozen weeks of down-time in what passes for summer in the Cumbria.

I had good intentions of getting a short ride in first thing today, before plans from 11:30 onwards......opened the curtains at 8am to be greeted with the sight of snow falling and sticking, so went back to bed!
