who 'should' you like, but, try as you might, can't.

Heaven knows I'm fond of warblers but Sarah Vaughan, who is supposed to be the cat's pyjamas of jazz singers just passes me by. Ella Fitzgerald no problem. Eartha Kitt almost - but then she's not supposed to be great. Billie Holliday definitely. Sarah Vaughan is either too sophisticated for me or appeals to a sensibility that my ears just don't do...

I love classical voices, opera, liede, ancient music, you get the idea. However, I cannot abide Katherine Jenkins.

I agree with you dell. To Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holliday add Cleo Laine, Elkie Brooks, and England's home grown Claire Teal. Barbara Streisand is a singer to be reckoned with but not sure she qualifies as a jazz singer.

Sarah Vaughan leaves me cold, and so does Shirley Bassey.

It's a bit more complicated than that...

Don't be ashamed - that demonstrates taste, and an appreciation of what is good and bad in singing. Can I assume that you don't like Andrea Bocelli either?

I've never got ballet, or most of post-1950s popular music.

+1 on Katherine Jenkins. I WANT to like her, I like her in interviews and even retain interest when she talks about the music she is working on. Then she sings and I just cannot bring myself to like it.

Opera. Just about all of it, but particularly soprano singers grate on me. I like bits of operas, but I can't sit through the generally stupid stories and the endless filigreed arias. I think the only opera I ever really remember being impressed by was Janacek's From the House of the Dead.

Oh, and ballet.

Crooners, especially Frank bloody Sinatra. That hysterical brass noise which seems to infest all those records just sets my teeth on edge. I can also never get most jazz music, even though people assure me I'm just not listening to the right stuff. John Coltrane, Miles Davis and all their ilk do nothing whatever for me; it just sounds like people shouting "hey! HEY!! Look how clever I am! That was a C diminished scale over a Cadd9#2 chord, goddammit!". There's no soul in it, to my ears.

Difficult one for me as I don't ever think I 'should' like anyone... but I think I get the drift of the question.

For me, there are a couple of names that come quickly to mind; Matisse and The Who. The former I think is a wallpaper designer and the latter, well, I just don't see it as others do.

Elvis....sorry, but it's true.

Which one? Costello's voice irritates me now. If I hear those whiny nasal tones once more, particularly combined with misty eyed couples claiming 'Alison' as "our song"...

Opera's an interesting one. I don't like any of it fullstop. It would have to have been one hell of a hot date for me to sit through one! I'm afraid it leaves me cold but not bemused or bewildered. Consequently, not something I feel I should like even though I see clearly others adore it.
