If that's what the market want, then that's what they have to build if they want customers.
There's truth in that of course, but only up to a point, and it depends who 'they' are. Lexus can operate on that kind of market-led philosophy without reservation: they were created, from scratch, with precisely that in mind. But one of the things Jaguar buyers are looking for is something that's a Jaguar and not a Lexus, and that 'something' is far harder to pin down than market researchers might have you believe. Or maybe I'm wrong, and the market they play to now neither knows nor cares about Jaguar's unique heritage and (still) instantly identifiable 'look'. They just want a fast, smooth, comfortable etc car at the right price, and the name 'Jaguar' is nothing more than a sexy(ish) name.

Well said!

Good example is Rover. Abuse the name by sticking the badge on this -

and you just kill any value there is in the brand.

Volvo made the same error when they bought out Daf and re badged them.

The root of the issue is perhaps that makers create and sell great heavy lumps of car and then call them "Sport" or SUV. These things are really the antithesis of sporty as they are just a car that is two feet taller and half a ton heavier than normal cars, but somehow people are happy to rush out to buy them. In the top 10 uk cars at the moment are the Quashquai and Duke - both seem popular in "sport" editions. Is it that Jaguar is just buying into this lie?

A tiny minority (or should that be a tiny mynewtory?) of the membership may be of that mindset. A vociferous minority though . The silent majority can't be bothered to argue with them.

B.o.r.i.n.g Where's the "design"? Oh I see it, it's within the 2 clip on £10 plastic panels fore and aft. These are the bits nowadays that enable you to determine what manufacturer of car it is that is 6" in front of your nose. It instantly devalues the Jaguar brand. I woudln't buy one, just like I am not buying any more Aston Martins after this effort.

Absolutely. Which is why they neglect their differentiation at their peril. Looks like a false move to me, from a purely commercial perspective - a decision made by tone deaf 27 yr old hotshots at Ford in Detroit, with no appreciation of what makes (made) Jaguar Jaguar.

In fact Jaguar ceased to be Ford-owned some years ago and are now owned by Indian mega-corporation, TaTa although according to Wiki the cars are still designed in the UK by 27 yr old hot shots at Jaguar in Coventry and obviously you can't tell them anything.

Mainly because it is entering the aesthetic dead-zone principally occupied by 4x4s.

Anyway, I like the idea that my Toyota Yaris is really just a re-badged Aston Martin (made in France!).

yea but this is kind of forgiveable as it was only to get around the Euro emission standards.

I do actually recall this argument a while back with Rolls Royce (as they started using a Buick desiigned engine where they actually said that whilst it was originally specified by the yaanks, it was actually crafted by the brits and that set it apart.
I thonk it is disbelief - At a time when you would expect cars becoming smaller and lighter, they are ballooning out of all proportions. We seem to be heading towards a future where all cars will be the size of transit vans
Strange how the USA has gone the other way. They have mostly given up their huge gas guzzling Cadillacs, Buicks, Chevvys (PROPER Chevvys, not re-badged Daewoos) etc., and are now driving much smaller cars. Hyundai, Nissan, and Toyota seem to be very popular.
