I'm not so worried about them on the roads, I was just about taken out by one speeding along the pavement as I stepped out of my local Co-op, just as well I'm nimble as a cat(I wish) and managed to shimmy clear. The lout didn't even slow down, and certainly offered no apology.

Seems theres a few of these that must be cat3 being ridden on the pavement without the 4mph restriction. Rotherham town centre seems to be 'disability central' on weekdays, (theres usually one or two outside each pub) I regularly see them shooting through pedestrian areas and think "thats a 10k pace"

Surely the name 'mobility scooter' is a contradiciton? The people who use them should be 'immobile' or put more simply fat lazy b*stards, so they should be known as FLB scooters. They shouldn't have any place on the roads or any access to pavements much the same as Segways.

Right as the son of a mobility scooter user I can tell you that there are two catorgries of scooter. One cat is not allowed on the road, other than where a road need to be crossed, and is restricted to 4 MPH and the second cat which is is restricted to 8 MPH and must carry a "tax disk" type of of licence, which I believe has to be paid for, and is also allowed on roads.

They've got a place. There are some to whom they're a dogsend...However, like many things, they're open to abuse. I'd like to see abusers get some kind of comeuppance.
However I've the same feeling towards the BMX riders on the pavements, on bikes with no brake equipment fitted and to car drivers with any range of infringements.

They are dangerously slow though, even if they are the kind that is allowed on the road. Most cyclists ride at a lot faster than 8mph (even me and i'm a fat b@stard). For the safety of the rider (especially as many of them seem to be doddery old buggers who claim "Back in my day this were all farmland and we could roam free!") they should be on the pavement for their own safety. Some old people are shockingly bad drivers.

But what do I know, I don't need or use one.

Exactly what many motorists say about cyclists

I'm only 19, so hopefully not for another 50 or 60 years or so!

True but you show me a cyclist (not a yobbo on a bike) who rides at 8 mph with the complete airheadedness that some old people drive/ride mobility scooters at? For the most part, they don't ride that so or that naively.

I've seen 1 on the road, the fella fell off going round a corner and nearly ended up being hit by a car. My infantile 15 year old brain couldn't help but giggle at the poor old bloke but now I think about it he could have been killed. Anything slower than a cyclist is just too slow. I'm not suggest cyclists are slow and hold people up, but the fact somebody could be banned (for medical reasons such as sight) then just get a scooter and still use the road is a bit mad, wouldn't you agree?

"Anything slower than a cyclist is just too slow" You mean something like a pedestrian?

Pedestrians don't walk on the road though, they walk on the pavement, so how fast they walk is irrelevant.

They should get something like a bike instead......
I'm not suggesting they get a bike but I do think 8mph is far too slow to be going on a road. Can they use dual carriageways?

8mph on a 70mph is suicidal, yet legal (I've just had a look now) Hell, riding a bike quickly (25mph+) is still pretty mad on a dual carriageway.

Really? Want to try that one again?

As soon as you start down the line of "Anything slower than X is just too slow" you are playing into the hands of the Roadsafe muppets. If you drive , remember there is always the chance that something will be doing 0MPH and be in your path, you can accept that and drive accordingly or you can try and pretend it was their fault that you hit them. There are times when I will be doing less than 8MPH are you trying to say that I shoudn't be using a road?
