It's certainly harmless - but I just cannot comprehend why people would want to pay a ridiculous amount of money so that they have the privilege of having a number plate that tells everyone their name.
To each their own - some people wear watches that cost more than my house.
Maybe I would want status symbols.......if I had any status.
I think that is my approach, why waste your money, it's just one step away from silver wheel spinners. It doesn't improve your driving experience, but it certainly makes people notice, and not often for the right reasons ^_^

I do my own stunts
I know a bloke who had one bought for him by his wife.

It's amazing how many people notice you and where you've been with an odd number plate..
The bloke who knocked me off my bike - and gave me the wrong registration - had a personalised plate. Made it very easy to see and remember .

There's a guy a see on the way to work with TOSSER on his Merc, and there's a new Tesla with X WIFE. When/if I get a new car I'm thinking of getting RED COAT

I wouldn't mind if it was a legal plate. All too many alter the fit, letters or add bolts to end up with something illegal

Mind you it can be funny ..... and more expensive than a fine

Colleague of ours had HI 2 TOB (Hi to Toby)

He got caught speeding and it did the "why not go after real criminals" route so they went to town on the car and amongst a few minor issues they made him change his number plate to the correct H12 TOB - he was livid as he now had a plate that was ineffective, had cost him several hundred quid, plus the cost of new plates

Can we take it that you have a personalised plate?

Two, but only one in use. The K155*** plate I originally bought on a whim on a DVLA auction and put on the Wife's car. Cost me £400. Within a week of putting it on the car another motorist pursued the Missus halfway across town to offer her £2500 for it. Not long after I had a work colleague then offer me £2000 for it for his Missus. I didn't buy it to make a profit, but when I'm done and finished using it I'm confident I'm make a handsome wedge, so ultimately it won't have cost me anything, won't be 'wasted' money.

For the present time I like the plate so it stays. This is good because I'm a lazy git and can never be arrissed to remember number plates, phone numbers etc, so I only need to remember one plate no matter how many cars I get through, just like swapping a SIM between handsets.

The other plate refers to my old regiment and was bought as a gift. The temptation is to sell it, but as it was a gift I can't quite bring myself to do so.

I must agree that a plate which only makes sense when spaced out illegally is a twottish thing indeed. Get caught twice, and the second time the DVLA have the power to withdraw the plate.

If you get cut up by an aggressive driver with a 'personalised' plate and want some sort of retribution, just report the plate to DVLA.
A couple of drivers round here have had to re space numbers and letters on their plates to make them legal, making a nonsense of buying them in the first place.
One guy around here, with a blacked out Range Rover Sport, must have paid a fair bit to get a plate that could be altered to say something akin to his surname. Saw him the other week and now it's virtually impossible to work out a name on the plate.

I think personalised plates are ok.

You mean they are OKY, surely
