I used to work in the loading section of a bike factory and we used to dread loading a consignment of export bikes for India or China; they weighed a ton. After filling a 20' FCL with those your arms would ache.

My grandfather told me how he used to cycle from Emsworth to Portsmouth dockyard, with a single .410 shotgun slung on the crossbar so he could try to bag a rabbit if he saw one on the ride home. This would have been during WWII or shortly afterwards. I've not tried that, personally !
