for somewhere to go for a weekend away in the country later in the year.

i always find these type of things hard to judge as with a city break it's easy. You book a hotel that's central, clean decent and not too mental price wise as you'll not be in it much as you will be out sightseeing during the day and at night for meals etc..

With a country hotel you're pretty much stuck there so here's the issue.

Do I book a really fancy place like Gleneagles for argument sake (although I'm not going there) and just get a standard room or for the same price go for a hotel not so exclusive and expensive and get a really nice room or suite???

The reason being I was just looking at my diary for next year earlier and Mrs Greedo's parents will have passed away 20 years ago this March and would just like to take her away for the weekend after as every year she get's upset and I would imagine she will be a lot worse this year as she was only 17 when it happened.

Any recommendations would be most welcome. Not fussed if Scotland, England or Wales. Not a Celtic Manor type place though.

She's always mentioned Babbington House if anyone knows that but it looks like a pain getting there from Glasgow

This is a good place for finding decent hotels:

I always check the reviews here before booking a place.

Cheers for them

Philipbh. that site looks good. Just had a quick look and selected Scotland and the first hotel the comment said this.

Our inspector loved:

The famous Quaich Bar with over 720 malt whiskies is just the place to relax after a hard days fishing.

I'd never leave the bar ;)

Been there done that to be honest. Not ruled it out though. You know of anywhere?

Been here http://www.carltonredcastle.ie/ a couple of times. Good spot. Bar & restaurant are great, the spa is excellent and there is a golf course on site if you are into that.

Heading to Donegall today for a short break before going back to work after the holidays. Staying here http://www.villarose.net/

Hard to beat Donegall if you are looking for something in the country.

If you want N.Ireland http://www.galgorm.com/ is hard to beat. Had a couple of nights there to celebrate our wedding anniversary during the summer. Great hotel.

Cheers Jim That's brilliant and just kind recommendations I'm looking for.

I've actually stayed in the top one on a golfing trip many years ago. Looks as if they've upgraded that hotel quite a bit since then. Love it up that way.

2 nd one looks not too bad but I think the Galgorm has won it, if I decide to go to NI

That's exactly the type of thing I'm looking for. The price of a junior suite is the same price as a standard double in the likes of Gleneagles. Excellent. Love the fact it's on the river as well, nice spa and nice menus. Looks as if there will be lots of nice walks etc.....

thanks for that, much appreciated!

Yes the Redcastle has been renovated recently.

Just back from our short visit to Donegall last night. The Villa Rose is good.

Personally though I'd go with Galgorm. I don't think you would be dissappointed.
