ha ha! this strikes a chord!

I enjoyed cycling as a child, and, this continued until I was about 16-17, at which point, the allure of motor cycles, then cars came along.

Years later, (age 49) I had a heart attack. After this, I was on medication to control Blood Pressure. At some point, my GP wanted to increase dosage, which I was not happy with. At that time, the local NHS was running several "groups" doing "activities", my GP suggested I join the walking group. I enjoyed the walking, but, I hated the continual conversation(s) that many of the group member seemed to fell were obligatory. So, I ditched the walking group, and joined the cycling group. Ideal, far less talking, I lost weight, BP came down. Been cycling ever since (solo or with wife).
I like the occasional chat but, at least if you cycle it limits the opportunity to chat to others or, for others to chat to you. The other bonus is that if you get cornered at a Cafe you can say your goodbyes, throw a leg back over the bike and bugger off.

Ha Ha, I recently told my son that we used to build ramps and jump over our mates (well most of them) who would bravely lie on the floor.. His look of horror made me realise how much we must fuss over them these days! We laughed in the face of Danger

We used to do the same and have the ramps in the road as well.

Ive been cycling for many years but had an accident and had a break for a few years. Im a big bloke and over the last 3 month have lost 2.5 stone. I love cycling, I love the freedom it gives me. Im a hell of a lot fitter than I was. Still need to lose a fair bit more but Im enjoying doing it. Been going back to places Ive not been to for years. Im happy.

Good for you, great to hear your enjoying your cycling and the diet is paying off as well. Great effort. 👍

Yes, I like the OCCASIONAL chat, but, the walking group was composed of people with health problems, and, was heavily weighted toward the female of the species. There is only so much of other people’s health problems I can take. I am more of a “let us try to ignore it and enjoy ourselves” sort of person.

The cycling group was much more to my liking. ;)

The thing is that we knew it was dangerous and therefore if we got hurt there was no point in running home to your parents (if you were still able to) in tears as you shouldn't have been doing it in the first and would get no sympathy.

To be honest i had a bike as a kid but never used to ride it that often. I didn't really get into the "joys" of cycling until maybe my mid thirties when the children had bikes for Christmas and i found it impossible to keep up once they had learned to ride!. I bought a cheap mtb which served the purpose just fine. Mrs marshmella also bought a bike ( and i had to teach her how to ride as she had never had a bike in her life) Great family rides were had for a few years.

I began cycle commuting around 2008 mainly due to the soaring price of petrol.I Liked it so much i even did it in the rain😅. All year round commuter until 2017 when i changed jobs. I really miss that unspectacular commute.

shoot, I'd forgotten about those tricks. A rear BMX wheel across the stomach was regarded as "character forming", especially if the victim puked up.

The thing is that we knew it was dangerous and therefore if we got hurt there was no point in running home to your parents (if you were still able to) in tears as you shouldn't have been doing it in the first and would get no sympathy.

Any time I limped home with some self-inflicted damage, the response would usually be anywhere between a withering look and a "why are boys always so stupid?" comment, to a clip round the ear combined with "one day you might learn some sense, but I probably won't still be around to see it" Sympathy was a commodity in short supply.

I cycle because I am a miserable unsociable ba-tard and I can take myself off on my own for hours on end without having to interact with the rest of the population who will have opinions and views that I have no interest in.
Liking your own ways is not being miserable, it's your choice. I find it annoying to be labelled as miserable, weird or strange just because you don't follow the crowd like a sheep.. Be a maverick that's what I say :music:

I got my first bike aged 5 when I got to 10 I thought I hope this feeling lasts for ever went out yesterday age 65 and it does so far
Spot-on, I never get that feeling in a car.. I am a bit of an old school traditionalist though and, I'm always reluctant to embrace the new tech as it comes along. By new tech, I mean Disc brakes, 11spd, Electric Shifting, Belt driven not chain, ebikes etc..

I have a love / dislike feeling for cycling, most of time I really like it, sometimes I can’t be arsed. About 18 months ago I discovered that I really enjoy taking old bikes apart and doing them up and getting them going again, I think I enjoy that more than riding at the moment.

Having just spent quite a lot of money on a new bike I feel duty bound to ride it, when I do I really enjoy it, but sometimes getting out the door can be a bit of a fag.
