I struggle with keeping 2 or more of the same type bike in the same place, I could always use one of the others if I needed to, but I do have some bikes that are rarely, if ever, used. Current stable is:

Singlespeed flat-bar road (used often)
Hub geared flat-bar road (used a bit)
Singlespeed MTB (used a bit)
Folder (never used, really ought to sell it, but you can bet if I did I'd 'need' one a week or two later)
Tandem (new acquisition, not used much yet, but hopefully will be over the summer)
Hub geared flat-bar road (kept at girlfriend's house and used as and when)

I also have a lovely 853 MTB frame that I WILL build up (geared) when funds permit.

I seem to be missing a drop bar bike. I've owned a couple in the past and never got on with them but reading this forum over the last few months has got me thinking I should maybe try one again:smile:)

I would like to add a recumbent to the stable as well. I've only ever ridden one for a few minutes but it seemed good fun. I'll have one at some point.

All racked up they make the garage wall look good, also anyone coming here for training is always impressed at the carbon bits and pieces.

Wish I had another bike as mine is broken  I think that alone would justify many bikes to necessitate a bike rack

I have a fixed which I use for commuting and general running around, a Kilmeston which is my Sunday best bike and an old Dawes Giro which is permanently on the turbo. I've got a little bit of money in the bank at the moment and I'm fighting N+1, the money is supposed to be for house repairs.

current stable is 6 rideable bikes plus a tandem , and then 1 nearing completion and 3 more frames awaiting work .

no justification needed

I've got 2 DFs 1 recumbent bike,1 trike & 1 unicycle. Every one is a work of art, and I'm lucky enough that they can be arranged round the house as such as well as pedalled. I can think up to at least n+3 without even trying. 2 are not exactly gathering dust, but are more dusted than ridden, and only the trike is an essential means of transport in daily use. Total value is much less than a rather mediocre car. I don't think so much as owning these things as being a custodian - whether I sell them, give them away, or let the executor decide, they will all give pleasure to others in future whether ridden or admired. Wasteful consumption is bad, but ownership of lasting objects isn't. For a while I had 5 cars, and still have several socks - cars are now down to 1.5, and I think I could manage on 3 socks.

Years ago there was an article in CyclingPlus by Sam Walker (although I expect he was Scott Munn back then). Not an entirely serious piece of course, but it listed how many bikes a person needs. It was quite a few. At the time I thought it a bit of nonsense. Now I think I'm the person described in the article.

The justification for buying another bike is that the shed looks a bit empty with only 4 bikes and 3 motorbikes in it

Currently I have a Roadie which I use on nice days for commuting (assuming i have nothing much to carry) and long weekend rides, a Sirrus comp which has just been replaced by a Boardman CX (which will be my main commuter with panniers etc and used for winter road miles) and a Specialized Hardrock Pro (2005) which is my shop/pub/family/offroad beater bike and ocassionally get to commute too if i feel like some offroad stuff on the way / way home.

So that makes currently 4 bikes, i cannot justify that many so the Sirrus is going to go. Great bike but it will not get used now and doesn't do anything the others cannot do between them.

I blame the seasons!

It was always my intention to get by with just one bike, but it just proved completely impossible.
