So once you've employed enough cyclists to distribute 26 tonnes of cheese sandwiches (instead of 1 man in a Tesco truck), who will be emptying your bins? Who will be putting out your fires?

Nobody. In my dystopian future fires will burn unattended and Londoners will lie gasping in the gutter pleading weakly for cheese sandwiches.

Trucks don't belong in city centres. Planning, investment and business models sustain an usustainable model. There is a wasteful overuse of trucks in the UK, and especially in city centres, as we shift vast quantities of bottled watter and plastic spoons around the country. This is the right order:

1 Cyclist-awareness training for drivers
All city lorry drivers should be have ongoing cycle-awareness training, including on-bike experience.

2 Drivers must take more responsibility
Authorities must recognise driver responsibility for doing everything practical to reduce risks. Blaming a ‘blind spot’ should be an admission of guilt.

3 Safer design for London lorries
Lorries designed for off-road use should be taken off city streets. The best mirrors, cameras and sensors should be fitted as standard.

4 Higher standards from lorry operators
Quality-assurance schemes such as London’s Freight Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS) should be mandatory, and the police encouraged to crack down on rogue operators.

5 More responsible procurement
Companies must only buy haulage services from reputable firms, with government taking a lead in encouraging best practice.

Plus: Better education for cyclists
Cyclists must be given the most accurate and up-to-date information on riding safely around lorries.
Oh look an article about fitting belly bars!!!! one billion, zillion, quadruple million TMN's to me.
Here, have some more TMNs :

  1. Introduce cyclist-awareness training for drivers
All lorry drivers should have on-bike cyclist-awareness training.
  2. Compel drivers to take more responsibility
Enforcement authorities should recognise drivers are responsible for doing everything they can to reduce risks. Blaming a ‘blind spot’ should be an admission of guilt.
  3. Compulsory safety features for all London lorries
The best mirrors and cameras/sensors should be fitted as standard to every lorry in London. We opposed moves to allow longer lorries drive in the UK.
  4. Higher standards from every lorry operator
Quality-assurance schemes such as London’s Freight Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS) should be mandatory. Police must crack down on bad operators.
  5. All procurement to be made responsible
Companies should only buy haulage services from reputable firms, and the public sector must take a lead in encouraging best practice and safe haulage.

I think all other road users should be made to drive an artic around a private course as part of the test ( wouldn't work for cycles obviously, as there is no test )

Many people haven't a clue what its actually like and how many blind spots there are.
It might make people a bit more aware of where they can and can't be seen

BTW, what on earth is TMN?
Go the LCC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Forgetting the fact that various EU directives have covered most of the above, but the LCC have failed to mention that.
If these things were adequately covered and enforced, we'd have saved a lot of lives. They're not and you're mocking people complaining about them not being adequate? Take a look at yourself.
it is down to a belly bar not being fitted which has lead to the majority of cyclist deaths.
That's simply not true, that's pure invention.

Source? Were they left hooks or rear impacts?
So you think people should be made to ride a bike?
If that's what it takes to stop a class of driver that kills cyclists disproportionately, yes. Or, if there's some physical disability other than being busy operating hand-held devices or sandwiches in heavy traffic prevents them from cycling, they should have to pass some kind of empathy test.
