Especially as many of us, especially if really going for good grades, do more hours than most full time jobs (not all, most).

Go down to the local fishmonger and buy a dead fish, to give to them, it will save time in the long run.

Some of your problems are as follows:-

1) You do not know how to select healthy livestock and may well buy a fish that is not in peak health.
2) While in your care you may fail to give it sufficient care to keep it alive, you are responsible for providing its environment which is its life support system. I.e. clean, chlorine free water with the correct pH and temperature.
3) In order to have a properly set up filtration system a tank should be set up well in advance of introducing livestock with some source of ammonia so as to allow the filter to become biologically mature. Does the recipient have such a tank?

Basically you wouldn't give someone a puppy as a secret santa and a fish is still a living creature.

ugh....simple answers can be impossible to get on this website sometimes, it seems we must all pass a moral scrutinizing test before any answers are obtained.

Ok, we all got given a secret santa at random at college, the guy I got is a nice, quiet guy who once got teased (not bullied for you liberal wishy washy, we must wash everybody's feet type....just teased in a friendly manner) for loving goldfish excessively as he used to talk about his pet goldfish alot. Anyway time has passed on, the goldfish died of old age, and to my knowledge this guy still has the fish tank - and I have just added the brother of this guy on facebook to check they still have the fishtank.

I think a goldfish would be a funny present, and he also has the ability to cater for them, as I described above, so I was asking on here how to humanely carry out the task, and if it was indeed possible. Obviously the fish would need to live for a while in a cheap container, so I would like to know what would be good to use, and how much food to give it etc. I also wanted instructions on how to keep this fish alive until it was put into the fish tank, incase there were measures which had to be made to keep it alive after I had presented it as a gift, such as changing the water, feeding the fish, letting air to the water etc.

from personal experience, a goldfish would survive in a bag of water the size that you get your loaf of bread in. you fill it 1/2 with water and then "fluff" it so that other half is full of air.

you can also by oxygenating tablets.

you are looking at 7 hours? dunno how big sa bag you need for that.

gold fish not being tropical, aren't going to be worried about cold water - the coldeer the water is the slower the metabolisim and the need for oxygen.

you would want to put the fish in a large bucket of water and put it ouside to cool slowly, then scoop the fish into a big bag and then put bubble wrap around the bag to keep the temperature down.

still don't think it is a good idea but ....

Just put it in the box, with a bit of oxygenating weed. It'll last for ages.. There you go, the simple answer that was needed. no need for anyone to get b-oyster-ous

Monty Monty Monty... how long have you been a member on here?

You should know you can't post a message like that without a whole load of bandwagoners people jumping to conclusions, presuming you are going to get drunk, hang the bag with the fish on the wall and throw darts at the bloody thing!

Goldfish are pretty hardy little blighters, just try not to vary the temperature of the water too rapidly and it should be fine.

I still think that giving pets is a crap idea. If he wanted a goldfish surely he would have already bought a replacement.

Maybe he has been too traumatised by the loss of his previous goldfish and now wants a new one but is too scared to take that leap of faith and purchase one??
