My mother used to resent the starlings eating any of the bird food she put out. She felt they were greedy and not as needy as the more attractive (to her) smaller birds. She would even rush out and chase them off.
My wife doesn't like it when the pigeons are in the garden, 'stealing,' food from the fits and finches.

[QUOTE 4760302, member: 9609"]Here is a little thrush enjoying our pond at the moment, in the last half our we have had, Siskins, Chif Chaf, Goldfinches, Starrlings, and a Grey Wagtail coming into make use of the water. I will even get Swallows taking a drink on the wing - I would love to get a picture of that.

Nice piccies.

Grey wagtail! I've never seen one of those. We only get the pied wagtail here. The RSPB site tells me they prefer hills and streams, which is maybe why they've not visited us.

With the extended string barrier, I can report a second morning sans-mallards. I have also spotted 2 smooth newts in the pond this morning, so the ducks didn't get them, and a healthy number of tadpoles have survived the onslaught. I can't see any of the oxygenating plants, though. Surely they've not eaten that.....
