I've seen lots of photos of broken helmets. Are there any showing compression?

Mine didn;t

until I pressed the outs plastic in and found a large compressed area where I though my head gently tapped the tarmac

clearly it was massively more than a tap

most of the images I found on Google seemed like mine
no outer signs of compression as the outer skin had sprung back
 
I think the head injuries on boxing arre due to acceleration of the skull caused by a blow
and the resulting movement of the brain inside where it hits the inside of the skull

which a helmet doesn very little to solve - and the same applies to cycling

Yes, that's correct; the main effects cycle helmets are reducing abrasions and minor bruising.
The design is inherently unsuited to preventing your brain rattling around inside your skull.
(In fact skull fractures - alarming as they always sound - are in fact a good way to reduce the momentum of your brain in impacts.)

While still not perfect, MIPS does quite a lot to reduce that effect.
 
The MIPS point is interesting because the argument that twisting motions were common and that helmets would not help with, and could even aggravate, those was rejected until MIPS helmets became available. Then suddenly twisting was a concern and you needed a MIPS helmet. I find it difficult to know whether other limitations might be being treated similarly.
