Kennington - public bike pump

I went and had a play with it this evening. The seats outside the pub could not have been placed better by a stadium designer for the view they give of the pumping action and I can already imagine the shouts of encouragement or otherwise from the stands.

It's an unobtrusively obvious and quality feeling pump with a good-looking guage, decent 'nozzle' and huge barrel. It's right beside cyclists pulling up when the lights turn red throughout the day so I wouldn't be surprised to see short queues at certain times.

There's a message on it saying how properly pumped tyres make cycling easier. For a load of people who don't have a track pump at home it'll be a revelation. I heard a couple walking past say they would come back and use it later.

Did anyone notice this bit in the article:

Two cyclists who left their bikes outside Waterloo Health Centre in Lower Marsh on Thursday will have found their bikes relocated a quarter of a mile away to the rack's new home outside Caffe Nero in The Cut.

If I came back and found my bike missing I would have been a little "unhappy"

Caught my first sight of it on this morning's commute. I was on t'other side of the road and couldn't get much of a look. I was dissapointed to discover it stands only about 3ft off the floor, unlike the gigantic thing I had seen in the photo!

it's pretty tall, Wanda would have a hard time trying to pump her tyres up

it sits by the lights and there's 3 bollards along there (incase it gets lonely) and
unless you're looking for it you'll walk sraight pass

During business hours, most cycle shops are happy to loan you a track pump aren't they? Whenever I've asked they've been accommodating, it's never occurred to me that one might actually refuse.

in the smoke, I expect so. out here in yokel land, not so much.

it's not only the beer that's flat

at home i put 80psi into the front tyre and today we paid homage to the pump
and it pumped to 65psi, yes we lost pressure

and 20 minutes later the tyre exploded


even Mice had a hard time using the pump

Fab idea! Someone should start a map (there's one inside Evans shop on Deansgate in Manchester)

Having fixed a front flat for my li'l sister outside our hotel in Fort William, on Wednesday morning, I discovered that my mini pump wasn't doing a very good job of getting the tyre back up to a respectable pressure. I managed to get it useable-ish then we took our lives in our hands once more on the A82, headed into town and I asked in this place if we could borrow.

Smiley young chap behind the counter handed over a track pump without so much as blinking and I popped outside with it to where the bikes were parked up against a convenient bin and did the honours (while my sister admired the shiny trek in the window in a 'just sold my car and am contemplating n+1 manner).

Really helpful staff and they clearly had done that before.

I asked at a bike shop near me if I could borrow a track pump once as my mini pump was rubbish (I've now bought a Topeak Morph ) and it would have saved me going home to get one.

The chap's response was that they didn't have one! Not sure how he fixes punctures then? For obvious reasons I'm not prone to giving him much business.
