One of the disadvantages of the kindle is that on the shop on the devise it defaults onto the buy button. Be careful what you press .

Yep, the One-Click purchasing can be deadly

You can always get a refund though if you contact Amazon within a set period following your 'accidental' purchase.

I did that once with a book I didn't mean to buy - just had to click the cancel this order button, the book was removed within a day and I had a refund at the same time.

Hmm, I'm a very quick reader...

(No, no, naughty Colin - you must pay for the books you read!)

I suspect that the Kindle records which pages have been read, partly to bookmark where you are, but also if you were to read a book then try to cancel it Amazon would know...

Posted from my new Kindle! The web browsing is pretty reasonable. Not tried the 3G yet though.

Now your next problem is to control the urge to buy and download too many books. I find the 3G is also very good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!

I know what you mean. I'll have to find the sites with the free books. I read a good tip just to download the samples of the books you want and only buy them once you're ready to read them. Another tip was to buy a gift card every month with a set amount on and when it's gone it's gone. Sounds like a good way to budget.

I found this list recently http://www.fonerbooks.com/free.htm#forster it's meant for the US so won't work but gives as reasonable an indication of any for ideas for what books are free on manybooks.net or gutenberg US. As it points out in the article many books are hidden away on amazon or not available.

Not quite sure what's going to happen with Kindle in the UK as say for example F Scott Fitzgerald died in December 1940 which means that in the UK and a few other counties (NOT the US) all of his books should come out of copyright very soon. Somehow I doubt they are going to appear on amazon UK if it is correct they come out of copyright here. They won't be appearing on gutenberg either as that's US.

I'll have to check out that list before I leave the US.

One of the things that worries me about buying a Kindle is that, as I understand it, you are tied to buying new books from Amazon. I know the Kindle will read PDFs, but is there any way of getting it to read books from other electronic book stores.

Apologies if this has already been covered elsewhere on this thread, but I couldn't spot it on a quick read through.

Nope, you can buy them from wherever you like. Buying from Amazon just means you can buy them wirelessly on the device itself; with other sources, you copy from your PC via USB cable.
