That is a really smart looking machine, it has to be said and I hope she has a great time out and about on it. I'm a new returnee to the fold so I apologise in advance for my ignorance, but I can't say that I've seen that type of groupset before. Does that set up with the single front ring give a good spread of gears?

Evening, the wife has made an effort recently to get into cycling especially as my 5 yr old absolutely loves it and I'm suffering a bit at the moment.
Decided to speak with my LBS and we did a deal on this kinesis AT tripster.
Without going into massive detail we upgraded the wheels, brakes, fitted cross bar brakes and few other bits. The pedals are a temporary thing until we've decided on which pedals/shoes to get.
In a stroke of luck it'll fit me as well!
Hopefully get out on this weekend.

* she knows I call her the wench so please don't be offended on her behalf!!

The down tube was borrowed from a Kinesis MTB - the kink in the top is for steering clearance with a suspension fork.

The original Tripster was part of Decade range to celebrate Kinesis' 10- Year anniversary - the same as my Virtue.

The frames were very similar in lots of ways

I must say, that new one is even nicer

I was in Ewood Bikes on Monday when you were there looking at it while Ian attempted to chat with us both. Lovely looking bike and I left feeling quite envious. After you left Ian spent some time explaining the x1 chain ring which I'm still trying to get my head around. I'd be very interested to learn how your wife gets on with it. Ian's lending me a x1 Cannondale to try.

Good luck and good riding to you both

Someone I know lent me their new Whyte Friston to try - it was a bike I was/am considering - it has 40 x 10-42 (or poss' 11-42) x1 gearing.

It was very nice to ride. Whilst x2 is no real chore x1 seems how gearing should be if the technology was available from the off.

I found the jumps on the cassette just fine and tbh they only get pretty big over the last few cogs (shifting down) or so and once you are getting into 1:1 territory a big drop is a merciful blessing on a steep drag esp' if you are more concerned with keeping moving rather than maintaining cadence,

SRAM double tap seems to me to be more intuitive than Shimano's system too.

@SpokeyDokey the pictured bike has 10-42 from memory. As I’m not a very technical person I’ve some difficulty in understanding how one would get the same speed out of the higher gears as with a double. This is just my ignorance!

Thanks for your comments. I am really only interested in moving up hills rather than spinning at a high cadence so this should be fine.

I have SRAM on my Dolan Dual and think it far superior to Shimano with the double tap system. Always a positive and definite change in either direction.

I can’t see a new bike on the horizon for some time, even I might admit I’d need to sell one first, but gathering info for the future is always valuable..........and the day dreaming is excellent!!

I'm sure that this link will explain it better than I can. Look through it and you'll see another link to sram rival.

Cheers Stuart.

Life and kids parties conspired against us this weekend so I was only able to go round the estate a few times to see how it rode. Hardly a comprehensive test but the gearing just made sense, it's quite hilly round here even on the estate and it was a doddle to use. I'm tempted to give it a proper go one day this week but it's her bike so I suppose she should get the maiden trip?!

LBS mentioned the above article and is trying to get me onto a forme CX with the same gearing. Must resist!
