Well that was a new one on the way home tonight. There is some painted lines on a footpath next to work someone in the council calls a "cycle path" I do not use this jem for the fact i go a lot faster than is safe to do so on such a pants path plus it is only a few yards long before it rejoins the road at a set of lights with a cycle box in front of the traffic. On the inside is a First bus double decker which has stopped at the red lights,i know the lights have only just changed to red and are a long fuse so i overtake the bus to get in position in our box.Mr bus driver must have seen the nasty cyclist and decides to fill the box with his bus (the above entry from the path) Not a problem to me as i just park in front of him in full view.Next i get a beep, beep at which turn round to see Mr bus telling me i should not be on the road but on the "cycle path" at which i reply you have parked on the section of road for cyclists ! Lights change and i keep my ground knowing the idiot is behind where he passes me for the few seconds before he has to stop behind the long line of traffic that i happily pass using the only bit of useful ON THE ROAD cycle path ! I had a good mind to take his number and ask his employer to teach said idiot that we have as much right to use the road as any other road user but the fact he was left stuck in traffic made up for the crazy comment.Am i the only one who has such a lame comment said to them,it's a first for me !

I agree about the use of some of those cycle paths where you are on and off the road, in my mind they are a recipe for disaster.

Professional drivers should know better and I think I would have certainly made note of his number.

My thought too especially from a driver who must know the road as well as any.I wish i had taken his bus number, but i won in the end AND i have a good chance of having a "chat" every night ;)
The "cycle" paths are an absolute mess because they are mostly just lines on the road which the likes of Mr Bus just use as an extra wide road and carve up.Pity about tonight because it had been a good week of commuting even in the buttock twitching sow from yesterday.

Good man, if I have anyone being funny with me, I usually blow them a little kiss.

Most definitely report his ignorance to the company, and ask them to let their drivers know the rules. You might like to quote both the highway code and the DFT advice on not using a cycle lane if travelling at 18mph or more.

This is one of the reasons why bad cycle facilities are so much worse than none at all - the aggression we get for quite correctly not using them!

I agree with BentMikey. You handled the situation really well but another cyclist may be intimidated or aggressive. He sounds like an ignorant idiot, but the ignorance part could be remedied if you let the company know about his lack of knowledge.

Normally I find bus drivers to be quite good, but today I had one try and overtake me on a main (quite wide) road whilst I was about to turn right. A good stare held him behind but I don't know what he was thinking ... there was plenty enough space to go on my left and I gave enough notice too.

You dont have to know his number to write a letter to the company in the interests of everyone. :hello:

If you did you could just make several points like:
- you're not mentioning the driver as you feel they may have either misunderstood the HC or might have had a bad day (would make you look good ;))

-HC guidance of 18mph and less for pedestrian safety, you were clearly faster

-lack of distance on the cyclepath for where you'd entered/exited the road

- the driver was in the ASL (which is there for your visibility so that large vehicles can see you and so cyclists are not left hooked stuck down the side of traffic waiting for the lights)

- and obviously how the driver didnt get very far.

You've already made those points here could be interesting to see if they respond to them.:bravo:

Beside the road
I'm always getting drivers honking their horns at me and pointing to the useless cycle path that runs beside the road I commute home on. I wish someone would come along and pull the thing up.

Further on down the road I get into trouble again. I need to go straight on a roundabout. You be amazed (well probably not) as to how many drivers try and push past while i'm in primary then turn left even though i'm beside them.
Again loads of horn blowing and angry shouts because they can't get passed there and then.

Talking of know-nothings...cyclist pulled up alongside me at the lights this morning to say that he'd just been asked by a black-cab driver if he knew where Kingsway was. They were on it at the time, and Kingsway is a BIG road. Whatever happened to The Knowledge...?
