Here's just over a third of the hand made chocolates available from Kennedy's Chocolates in Orton. They also have a coffee shop joined to the shop. It's ten miles from Appleby and not to be missed. If you do miss it for some reason they do mail order.

Settle to Carlisle Railway is worth a trip. You could get off and do a walk to see the viaduct or go to Carlisle, which is an interesting little cathedral city.

Honister slate quarries are well worth a visit, really spectacular. There's also a via ferrata if the weather is clement.

Boat trips on Windermere or Ullswater, either hire a skiff or go on a cruise round Belle Island.

Kankku in Windermere, hire an ex-MOD Land Rover 90 with satnav and do a green lane safari round the south Lakes.

DO NOT be tempted to do Beatrix Potter, it's garbage.

Shiela's Cottage in The Slack, Ambleside, for good scran.

The Glassworks in Ambleside (near the car park) for glass blowing and lovely gifts.

Skiing on High Raise if there's snow.

Windermere Steamboat Museum was good but currently closed.

Booths cafe at Windermere station and Lakeland just behind, good cafe also, shop is full of solutions looking for a problem.

And of course.... mountain walking!

Old Dungeon Ghyll and New DG for some mountain inn ambience.

Will think for you,but stay away from the main fleshpots-usual junk and unusual prices(-Windermere a good example!)Off. the top of my head,Penrith for the Toffee(& chocolate)Shop,or,and dont laugh-Westmorland Services at Tebay for a view of how to do motorway catering as it should be done! The Eden Valley is itself well worth your time,as are parts of the West Coast,Solway sunsets are something wonderful.Dont, please, do what everyone else does and stick to the same area.

Barnet,
The Mortal man Inn in Troutbeck serves really good food and Ales, and from there you can walk over Wan Fell to Ambleside, a stiff climb and decent but a good couples of hours walk each way.

There's loads to do in Westmoreland, but if you insist on going to the Lake District, a circuit walk of Derwent Water, 10 miles, flat, lovely views. Or climb your first Wainwright? Catbells, largely recognised as the easiest of them all, again near Keswick.
