I thought so too. The quote from Dell for a replacement HD on its own was £190. Very curious!

I'm guilty of droning on a bit about this, not that anyone listens but a laptop is not worth buying unless you buy an extended warranty and cover yourself through your house insurance for tipping your glass of wine into it. If they last the length of the warranty all well and good, any longer is a bonus. Mrs Crackle isn't listening either, despite being on her 2nd laptop after the first spent more time in HP than at home, she is now intent on buying Crackle1 one as well.

Dell always quote stupid prices for hardware, the trade price for that drive is propably around the £30 - £40 mark depending on if it is PATA or a SATA drive and on how big it is.

I do those repairs all the time it never fails to amaze me the prices these companies quote.

I've always assumed that extended warranties were generally a rip-off but in the case of feeble laptops you may well be correct Crackle.

I had a similar experience with a Dell laptop a few years ago. Explained that I had tested with another HDD & all was OK. They were OK with my explanation (after explaining/arguing that I couldn't run the diagnostics from the partition on the drive since the drive wasn't recognised!!)

P.S. I had a HDD at home that you could have had!

I think you're right but not so easy when you have a certain 'superior' other that likes to browse while watching telly.

For future reference I do all types of PC / laptop repairs, installing networks, etc. I'm an IT Manager / Technician in my day job so I sort of know what I'm talking about. I charge reasonable rates too!

Hardware repairs I'll do if you're local to me, or if you're prepared to courier it to me and pay for it to be couriered back if you're not local.

Software problems I can often deal with remotely so long as you have a working internet connection.
