I'm considering fixing the old peepers once and for all and a mate of mine has just got his done (admittedly at a VERY expensive place that I wouldn't dream of going to, primarily because I don't have 3 and a half big ones!)

Trouble is, it doesn't fix it for ever. Your eyes keep changing.
A friend had laser surgery a few years ago, lens implants in March this year and already they are changing again and she needs (weak) reading glasses.
I'd recommend monovision contact lenses. As your eyes change your lense prescription get changed.
