We've chosen the 27th because the clocks go forward the night before. That effectively gives us an extra hour of daylight, but we lose an hour of sleep so I'd suggest something like an 09:30 start. Sunset time will be just after 19:30 so that would give us at least 10 hours. I'd be pretty surprised if we couldn't manage to average better than 10 mph on a flat route like that, even allowing for stops.Looking at the proposed route,if I was struggling on the return leg I could cut 10 miles out
by cutting through Garstang and rejoining the route again by the m6
What sort of start time are we looking at for this ride in order to get back before dark?
We'd have to bear in mind the ferry at Fleetwood. At this time of year, it leaves on the hour so I think we'd be wanting to make sure that we didn't arrive a couple of minutes too late for it. I might work out an alternate route in case we do just miss it. No point in hanging about for an hour when we could just ride round the river mouth instead.
The ferry company warned me that we have to walk down some steps with our bikes, but that should be okay for anyone in SPD shoes. Anybody wearing shoes with external cleats might have to take them off to be on the safe side!
