Looking at the proposed route,if I was struggling on the return leg I could cut 10 miles out
by cutting through Garstang and rejoining the route again by the m6

What sort of start time are we looking at for this ride in order to get back before dark?
We've chosen the 27th because the clocks go forward the night before. That effectively gives us an extra hour of daylight, but we lose an hour of sleep so I'd suggest something like an 09:30 start. Sunset time will be just after 19:30 so that would give us at least 10 hours. I'd be pretty surprised if we couldn't manage to average better than 10 mph on a flat route like that, even allowing for stops.

We'd have to bear in mind the ferry at Fleetwood. At this time of year, it leaves on the hour so I think we'd be wanting to make sure that we didn't arrive a couple of minutes too late for it. I might work out an alternate route in case we do just miss it. No point in hanging about for an hour when we could just ride round the river mouth instead.

The ferry company warned me that we have to walk down some steps with our bikes, but that should be okay for anyone in SPD shoes. Anybody wearing shoes with external cleats might have to take them off to be on the safe side!

yep that was the hilliest ride i've got recorded, the only hilliest ride i've remember doing that was similar was 2,500m over 50 miles (according to bikehike) and that was over a year ago.

so cheers guys.

colin,
i need a ride with 3000m climbing, local, doable in a day and less than 70 miles. you reckon you can plot one from my house / hebden? without repeating roads in the same ride? if so, get a thread started.....

Just remembered, I'm busy that day

(what do you mean you didn't say when it's happening)

Colin- I see we now have a possible detour for ice cream and now a detour if the timing for the ferry doesn't work out, this ride is getting longer by the day

I think your trying to get me to do that 200km by stealth tactics

Not really!

If you look at the map, the detour for ice creams at Elswick is like doing the other two sides of a square, We were going to go south then west; instead, we'll go west, then south.

I like the idea of the ferry because ...

  • It would make an interesting change
  • We can go on quieter roads for that section of the ride
... but if we miss it and do the detour round the mouth of the Wyre, I'll take some miles out elsewhere to correct the distance.

Okay, I've done that on Memory Map. I'll change the route on Bikely tomorrow, and also put the alternative route up. Now I'm off downstairs to watch the highlights of today's Paris-Nice stage!

So what you want is something less than 50% longer than what we did yesterday, but almost 50% hillier! I'll plot one for you, but I won't be riding it until I'm a heck of a lot fitter!

Spring Into The Dales in 6 weeks time will be hard enough for me, and that is about 110 km (69 miles) with 2,350 m of climbing.

I'll see what I can come up with tomorrow.
