That's correct . The old new bars where a cheap pair to try for a fit . The old old bars that where stock with the TCR will probably go on the Defy as they are quite nice .
Having slept on this I have decided to go and get the old new bars and ebay them to raise funds towards a new dummy for 400bhp .

So long as the dummy has ZIPP emblazoned down the side I'll sleep happy

Am I right in thinking they didn't charge you a tenner for fitting but did keep a pair of nearly new bars that you just bought for £30? So technically stung you for an additional £20 by doing this? I'd be getting them back if it were me...

From what I gather (although I've probably misunderstood);

  • You went into your LBS and asked if they could fit a set of ZIPP bars, they didn't have any in stock but ordered in some which cost about £30 with a £10 fitting fee
  • You went elsewhere and managed to pick up some ZIPP bars for cheaper which you asked your LBS to fit, they still only quoted you £10
  • They had unforeseen complications and so charged an extra £11 (bringing the total to £21)
  • They kept the original bars which they ordered in

So essentially instead of paying £40 (the bars + fitting) you paid the LBS £21 (the original fitting cost + the complications). I'm struggling to see why you would expect to keep the bars which they ordered in as well? From what I gather you never actually paid for them?

No I ordered the smaller £30 bars and had them fitted and paid £40 with fitting .
The zipp bars are about £280 retail but I found some for a lot less .
I went to my LBS with the bars and asked if they would be willing to fit them . They said nice find and yes we will fit them for £10
I knew it would be a bitch of a job as all the cables go through the bars and then through the frame so I bought beer . I did offer cake but was told the swearing means beer
I was then only charged for the new cables and bar tape . I asked if that was for everything and told yes . So actually no fitting charge .
I think I will nip in tomorrow and say keep the bars .

So essentially instead of paying £40 (the bars + fitting) you paid the LBS £21 (the original fitting cost + the complications). I'm struggling to see why you would expect to keep the bars which they ordered in as well? From what I gather you never actually paid for them?

FWIW a bike shop owner yesterday told me that in April he reckoned he had fitted £1800 worth of accessories that customers had bought from the web instead of from him, at very little profit for the fitting because you can't really charge the true cost of your time and overheads.

That surprises me, I'd have thought there was more money to be made in labour charges over product margin / markup...

I'd ****ing go back there tomorrow, demand my old set of bars back plus the eleven pound the cheeky ****ers. **** like this that makes me feel no shame in trying everything on at the LBS and making sure I like it and then go and purchase it online for far less[/QUOTE]

I bet your a real hoot on a day out, what with your polite carefree manner.
