I used to have a rockhopper which constantly needed something and that after I had a carerra which was solid as a rock and a quarter of the price! Sometimes you just get them I reckon.

Mountain bikes take a lot more hammer than road bikes, especially in the Peak District. The grit is a bike killer.

On a wet peaks ride I can kill a set of brake pads in one ride. Bearing wear quick as well.

Chains and cassette also take some hammer.

But it's great fun and I also see this as part of the course with the mtb.

I have 6 road bikes that have been imprisoned in the garage since the monsoon season started nearly 5 months ago, I must be in for a hefty bill then :laugh:

...yep, maintenance sucks - life's too short for all that.

First MTB I owned was rigid, second was a soft-tail, third was full suspension, now I'm back to a rigid. All to do with horses for courses, here we get a long dry season and dust is the enemy, everything gets caked in it. Living in a flat area helps, single speed, one front brake, simple as I can get it at budget price.

The full suss MTB I had in UK was a Kona Stinky with hydraulic disc brakes - only ever got used along river towpaths and a few trails, never any muddy stuff.....what was I thinking?....that horse was never on the right course!

Hoping to try a carbon belt drive at some stage, but seem a bit pricey.....

Mtb gets a major service every 6 months. Full strip down clean and greased. Costs £120 plus parts. However this year it ain't going out till the bog fest trails turn into something a little firmer. Makes me sad seeing it caked in mud and grit.

Cx bike will be used while the weather is tosh easier to clean.

Maintenance sucks, but rides are all the sweeter if it's done dillgently. Nothing quite so psychologically awful as a bike that's only 85% right, that isn't quite optimum. You know it'll get round ok, but wouldn't things be just a mite brighter if it got round without squeaking, rubbing, wobbling, or whatever.

Think of maintenance as an investment in the quality of your next ride out.

....the point I was trying to make was why have a bike with all the bells and whistles, when all you really need is a carthorse for everyday needs. I like to build my own stuff, and a priority is to make it as simple and maintenance-free as possible. By nature I'm lazy, and will only view bike maintenance as akin to pulling teeth.....:biggrin:
