Forecast was right: yesterday was the single worst day on a bike I have ever experienced, by a long stretch!

Swirling, howling gales which in theory were mostly behind me, but in practice mostly made it hard work to stay upright....cold and wet though within 2 hours of starting.

Luckily my backup driver appeared at a cafe with spare clothing for me to add (full mountain jacket versus cycling waterproof helped!), & I survived to complete over 5000ft of climbing over the 60miles:

However....today looks even worse:

Guaranteed rain (yesterday only had the % at around 30-40%....liars!!)

The bad news is the backup driver heads home after breakfast (caring duties to return to), whilst I have 3 more days to return to Leicester....& I foolishly left the Ortliebs at home, using the smaller yet clearly less weatherproof Topeak one on the back....must see if our B&B host has any spare carrier bags to try to triple bag the ’waterproof’ bags my clothes are in:eek:

On the bright side, only around half the climbing of yesterday: it is flattening out....and I meet a daft pal 2 hours in who fancied joining me. Bet he regrets that by teatime

Mountain waterproofs on from the start today!

Good luck especially today it's terrible outside and only set to worsen

If it's any consolation both of my E2E rides (one each way) started out with terrible weather for 3 solid days - and the remaining days on both were just perfect for cycling.

Today was generally great fun! Rain stayed a steady drizzle, nothing like the howling gales of yesterday. 20miles to meet a pal, 40miles with him before he peeled away to head home…
Then a couple of miles on: crank disaster!

7mile freewheel and push down to tonight’s hotel…with a bike shop next door: will see if they can fix in the morning 🤞

It would appear Specialized knew this could happen to me, with my Sirrus X 3.0

Either they have been criminally negligent in not properly informing Dealers like Evans Cycles, who sold me it before Christmas and serviced it only weeks ago, or Evans have been criminally negligent in their failure to contact me.

Either way I am absolutely furious: that could have happened at any point, I was very lucky I was just cycling slowly up a quite backroad.

Let’s see what the bike shop here say at 9 this morning

Good luck with the bike ride and hope you get your issue resolved!

If you do still have problems when near Exeter I can highly recommend Hardy cycles on Fore street. Independent and good mechanic. There is also Bike shed who are a retailer, I'm pretty sure of Specialised, so maybe they can help with any warranty claims perhaps.

I have opened a thread on this in the Mechanics and Repairs sub-forum.
Note that the Recall Notice from Specialized was in early October and was for bikes sold 2018 up to Jun 2020.
Here: https://considertheconsumer.com/recalls/sirrus-bicycle-recall
Note OP bought bike in late November and had it serviced by the seller (Evans) recently.
I'd be more interested to know what the mechanism is for failure. The recall says "According to the company, the cranks may not have been installed to factory specification." Isn't the left crank: shove it on the splines and tighten the bolt to the correct torque?

Assuming it's a standard Shimano splined crankset/bottom bracket there should be a small plate with a pin that sits between the pinch bolts on the LH crank - you slide the crank onto the spine, flip the little plate so the pin engages in a hole in the splined axle - there's then a "plug" that screws into the end of the axle to retain the crank (it's a low torque pre-load, not much more than finger tight) - you then tighten the crank arm's pinch bolts to the torque setting printed on the crank arm. [It's the pinch bolts and plate that do the work to stop the crank arm sliding off the axle!]

The failure suggests that the retaining plate with the pin is missing . . . it's possible it was missed at the factory ? - but if the bike had any sort of decent service the cranks would have been removed, re-greased and refitted . . . I would be speaking to the place that serviced the machine.

When I ran an LBS I can only remember one instance of a crankset on a new bike missing the pin plate.

This is the plate : https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/...eAzVyt0LXnCGGS4H58zq0jVUneZtEV2S-kg1&usqp=CAc
