Lending your bike to a friend

I've introduced several colleagues to cycling through lending out a hybrid and a mountain bike for several weeks at a time so that they can get a good feel for what joys can be had from cycling. All of them went on to purchase bikes of their own. I gave my hybrid to a chap that worked at my local garage to keep.

@Mice, @Skipper9999, and @charlie b have all had a go on my Woodrup Chimera and the first two have gone on to purchase a Chimera of their own.

And yes @vernon - not just once but thrice. (Actually, every time I see you)! It is entirely because of you and your Chimera that Woodrup http://www.woodrupcycles.com/ and Fitzrovia bicycles http://www.fitzroviabicycles.com/ are busy with my bike for life which I blogged about here. http://the5milecyclist.blogspot.co.uk/2013/10/several-weeks-new-wheels-sunrises-and.html The building a bike for life journey has been a fascinating one and it was a direct result of riding your fabulous Chimera around Hull/Brighton/Hull. Rest assured (spds or speedplay zero permitting) I will be returning the compliment.

I let my fiancé have a go on my road bike when I first got it but he can keep his hands off it now! I probably wouldn't lend my bike out for any length of time not because I don't trust my friends but because I wouldn't be able to use it:tongue: But yes I would trust them with it for the day if you can't trust your friends who can you trust?:hugs:

I am willing to do it with cycling friends who I know will look after it. That said, I swopped bikes with my cycling buddy to ride a couple of miles from Dunsop Bridge to Whitewell and by the time we reached Whitewell one of the front wheel spokes had broken! Gawd knows how he managed that!

No. The other day mr dragon said he was going to borrow my bike to go down to my daughters house. My thought was... were you now. ? I don't think so. Get your own bloody bike.
That's a bit stern! Friends who want to borrow bikes (and step-sons even) are vetted very thoroughly before being loaned a bike, but the OH has free access to any of my bicycles!

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
It probably is harsh. However, he complained bitterly when I said I wanted a bike around 8 weeks ago, and complained about the one I wanted and complained about the price so I bought a cheaper one to keep him happy, and after all that he now wants to borrow it.

He also laughed because he thought it was quite funny that I wanted to start cycling again after 45 years. Didnt exactly do my confidance any good, so my answer is no. If you take the p..s he cant expect anything else. He doesn't laugh any more though.

Im not normally precious about anyhing I own. I have allowed my daughter to borrow jewellery, and even allowed my son to borrow my car. Its just the
Principle in this case. Plus the fact that he isn't very good on a bike himself. He looks a sight wobbling around. Ha ha

Yes if it wasn't for Vernon I would not be as happy in my purchase of a new bike . Great help and the trust put in on first meeting was unforgettable. Not sure if I can ever repay him ??? ( I also owe him a pie ). Mind you I am a bend it mend it person !!!

I used to think that I would lend my MTB to one of our friends. I now think that I wouldn't as we have discovered that he is exceedingly careless with other people's belongings.
So no. I would not lend either of my bikes to anyone. I am getting really selfish in my old age.

depends on the mate and bike. Offered to lend my mtb to a guy at work if his broke coz he doesn't drive, bike on last legs and he's waiting for cycle scheme to come out, I know he would look after it and an mtb can take a battering... But you would have to be a very good friend and very experienced, to get the carbon stallion !!! Thankfully, at 6 ft tall i tower above most of my mates so not really a problem.

I would but only to family or close (biking) friends.
Hubby let me ride his Specialized once....I loved it and asked to ride it again. He said no, even though he doesn't ride it now!!

Now where did I put those bolt croppers....

It's not about the value of the bike, it's more the fact that I like it in the condition it's in now. My friends don't "get" cycling, and they certainly don't get why I'm so particular about how I lock my bike and where I'd leave it, they'd think nothing of dropping it against a wall and wandering off.

I've lent my MTB, but wouldn't like to lend the tourer or the roadie. To me, they're as personal as underpants!

Does that mean you wouldn't lend your underpants to a friend in need? Shame on you.

Well, if they really wanted them, I s'pose I could be persuaded.
I still have a pair of boxer shorts my brother lent me some years ago. He says he doesn't want them back, but I'm trying to insist,

The mind boggles as to why your brother would lend you some underwear...
