Cormorants have a devastating effect on waters around where I live. Our club takes every effort to discourage them to the point of having and encouraging members to go to lengths of walking their dogs to the waters as an additional discouragement off the ponds as well as other measures(ropes, scarecrows etc). In winter they're being flushed off countless times in one day.

Pike Sywell FEb11.jpg

A few years ago, now, but a pike over 20lb caught with a drifting spratt (from Tesco) at Sywell Reservoir, Northants.

I've taken Grandson, nearly 11 now, fishing a few times & he loves it. He's more than happy tidfler snatching so far..

I had a reasonable sized Roach, on Sweetcorn, & this Tench, around 4 to 4½lb, at a guess, on a bunch of maggots. At Castle Ashby Fisheries (Brickyard Pond)

I only go a few times a year but, when I do, I enjoy it.

A day of irritating some carp anglers , First me and my brother in law got there early and my bil sat in the best carp hole and proceeds to fish for roach as he just enjoys getting bites . I set next door an initially fished for bream and the small stockie carp had a few . Then as all 6 carp Anglers sat bits less with their bottom baits for 90mins I changed tactics and fished a pellet waggler shallow for the following results

We packed up as it was starting to rain and a carper asked me what I caught and I replied 4 he was shocked apparently it had been fishing hard recently and 2 in a day was good 😁. He never asked how I caught them so I guess they just plugged away with their bottom baits when you can see the carp cruising around just below the surface

I used to go fishing a lot in my younger years. First fish I ever caught, and it's been my favourite fish ever since, was the lowly perch.

Another hobby of mine is tropical fish keeping so I decided a few months ago to turn my 360 gallon tank into a cold water perch tank! Now I get to keep my favourite fish at home!

Lad number two at the start of April and last Friday.
Now the weather is warming up sweetcorn isn’t as productive, having had nearly a 30 yr break from fishing, is all the new fandangled baits worth it ie pellets etc?

Only just seen this thread.

Bottom line, pellets work fine on commercial fisheries - either as loose feed or as hook bait (use a 'bait band' to keep it attached to the hook). Commercially-stocked lakes will have fish reared on pellets, so they will be used to the scent and taste.

I've had no success catching fish on the canals using pellets, they just aren't used to it. Top bait for canals is bread - I have caught some cracking bream, roach and tench using bread when pole fishing on the Grand Union Canal.

Nice catch, where is this mate? I'm normally pole fishing on the GUC, but occasionally do local lakes, Peatling, Shearsby Valley, Mill Farm.

It's a secret 😁
No it's a Ibstock brick club water in Ibstock . I believe your Southish Leicester so plenty of choice out around the Petaling area . Used to fish the GUC in matches back in the day . I guess there's plenty of unfished stretches out that way now as not many people seem to fish canal now

No wonder I didn't recognise the venue.
You're right - canals are really overlooked as venues these days, which is a shame because there's some nice fish in there. I mainly fish the Wigston, Blaby and Kilby Bridge sections of the GUC.

Dunno about lowly, but lovely for sure. Seems you like pike as well, from your username.

I referred to them as "lowly" because a lot of anglers regard perch as a pest. But they've always been my favourite fish since I started fishing around 14 years old.

My username, Esoxlucius, is of course the Latin name for the pike, though truth be told I've never been that big of a fan of the pike, I just love the Latin name!

The Latin name for the perch is perca fluviatilis, which doesn't quite seem to have the same ring to it, so esoxlucius it was.

I used to go fishing a hell of a lot. Fishing was my love wayyyy before cycling. I tend not to go as much nowadays but I'm retiring next year and hope to take it up again.

Yes I love that name Esox Lucius, I immediately recognised it as that of the pike because I loved the sound of it when I had a book of fish of the world as a kid.

The great thing about perch (from an angler's perspective) is that they will feed all year round, even in the depths of winter. Not the easiest of fish to handle as not only is the skin rough, it has a spiny dorsal fin of course and even sharp points on the gill covers. With all that defence and the camo colouring it's like the sergeant major of the waters, a lovely fish.

If you do take up fishing again, loads and loads of 2nd hand gear online you'll be spoilt for choice. Tight lines.
