There is an old saying...you can choose your friends, but not your family. I came from an abusive background like you Gromit, and I think I understand your need to post the letter here. Baring your soul to a group of people who are both annonymous and known to you at the same time is a major step towards accepting that the past is the past and you are strong enough and brave enough to move on and enjoy life. It's also, as you say, a public way of declaring your independance from an abusive father, in a safe environment. Fantastic step towards self freedom Deborah.

I have one question. Paragraph 9 of the letter, do mean "self loving" or self loathing? I'm a bit confused.

I think Gromit means loathing. Gromit, if you do want it proof reading, let me know.

Having known Gromit for many years, I think I can say that this stuff all goes back to before her Mum got ill, so well done for putting it into words. Even if you never send it, it's worth putting in print to get it out of your system, and posting it here is a step further than just writing it down and hiding it away.

I had a similar childhood to you and it's such a relief when you get to an age where you realise that none of what you were told is true, that you're not stupid and worthless and don't deserve the physical and mental abuse. I wish you all the very best for 2013 and beyond.

Writing it was a way of getting it all of my chest. I know that he would never reply to it. Posting the letter on here is probably one of the bravest things I have done. Plus he can delete it as an email or throw it away as a paper letter. But if its on the web, he can not get rid of it. Hopefully after all these years he will feel ashamed, even more, now other people know. If you get what I mean.
