+1 ilovebikes.

Unpaid leave; you go away and 'find yourself' you can always resign whilst you are away. You go away and don't find yourself you've a job to come back to.
You go away and figure out you just need to change jobs - which is often the case I think - then you come back and start looking whilst being paid.

YMMV

Forget the arson - fan the flames of desire...What Andy says; get this one out of your system and, on return, if it really does change your life then decision making will be strengthened.
Wish I had your courage to think of doing something like that Helen!

You don't need to 'force yourself' - it's up to you to make the decision, then do it. As to keeping your options open....I can't recall ever hearing anyone bemoan the fact that they did.

Oh, and - well done on the Big Decision, by the way. You'll never regret it, I'm sure of that, for sure.

Leaving the job open and then coming back in 3 months to tell your work that you're not returning after all is a personal decision which only you can decide that you're comfortable with.
Other than that I'd say do it.
