Thanks for all the thoughts.

I'm not quite Anne Mustoe's age, I'm mid 30s.

I don't want to mess my employer around and lose the goodwill I have hence handing in my notice as I didn't think there was any realistic prospect of getting unpaid leave this year and I really can't wait any longer. I've said if I take unpaid leave I'd need a minimum of 6 months, partly because I'd need that long to be able to rent my house out, but mainly because I need long enough to completely unwind and also not to have to rush the trip.

I would just add (not knowing your situation) to think about the things you would miss as well as the things you wouldn't. Family and friends may be very important to you and you may like to have them closer than at the end of a phone or internet connection - it's not just the job that you would be leaving behind.

Looks like most of you favour unpaid leave and are probably right. I know I'm incredibly lucky to be able to contemplate this.

I could cope with being away from my family for this long so that's not a problem. I'm actually quite excited about being able to keep an online journal for them all to read and share my experiences. I talked to my parents and sisters over Christmas and they've been very supportive of my decision. I was worried my parents would think I was being irresponsible.
