I went on a course and the instructor said it is very rare that cpr and rescue breathing saves anyone on the road side. Well done for doing your best.

I had a first aid certificate. Problem is the one I did are only valid for a year now, they used to be valid for 3 years.

I think different courses are valid for different lengths of time.

I've done a three day course and I have to go on a refresher half day every year (including a lot of CPR).

However I still don't think I'd be very confident about having to do it in a real-life situation though. I think you did well Maggot.

I've done different length courses and refreshers etc but I wouldn't want to use any of it for real.

Well done User76 for making the effort - at least their relatives can be assured that people didn't just stand around not knowing what to do.

I don't think it's the actual rolling it out, it's the shouting, panic, cajoling and criticism that comes with it and later the self doubt and could you have done any better, should you have done things differently that's the problem. So anybody that helps out at the scene of an accident I take my hat of too, there are far too many where no help is offered.

I''ve done a fair amount of first aid training related to work over the past few years, including a lot of practice under the supervision of a paramedic.

It's the practice and refresher training that I find is important. At one particular incident involving a seriously injured person, there was an almost subconcious response which kicked in and helped me cope with the situation.

Well done for doing your best.
And you have reminded me that my 1st aid certificate runs out in November. I shall be speaking to my boss tomorrow to make sure she books me on to the course.

Given your profession, I think this must be very hard for you. I did the four day First Aid, and live in fear that I might need to use it.

On the regular occasions I need first aid attendance at cycling accidents, (minor, I must stress) I do often defer from the qualified to the competent.

Well done Maggot. You should be very proud of yourself for kicking in your medical/military skills to do the best for the guy - the outcome was the outcome, not a consequence.
