Only had time for one ride with them so far but I can't see you getting better for the money. For the unlit roads I'll be using, I found my options limited. I wanted 2 hrs minimum with 1000 lumen minimum. Didn't find any self contained units being close to what I wanted.

You should not be using that on roads. Utterly stupid and ignorant. It being marketed as an off road light would make it obvious in the first instance. The beam pattern is silly, you want something with a long centre throw, with some spill and not shinig right up into everyones faces like that. It is not all about lumens.

I don't understnd why people want to buy lights like that anyway ,that have a lump of external battery pack that has to be mounted somewhere. Lights that use cr123 or 18650 batts are better in every way, they are never going to leave you stranded, as you can have spares. If the batteries go duff over time you can get new ones cheap. Plus an overall smaller foot print on your bike.

Being honest, I never even realised that they were not meant for the road. Read a few reviews of them being reviewed on road though...

On the 1.5 hour route I took the other night I met the grand total of 1 car. Anyway, i didn't buy them with the intent of riding everywhere with 1500 lumens! The light can be used with as little as 350 lumens which wouldn't offend anyone. When meeting cars, obviously i will dip the light. The light adjusts horizontally and vertically, so can be adjusted well away from oncoming traffic easily.

I don't feel comfortable with the idea of riding on our main roads in the evening which pretty much means that the terrain I'm using is very hilly, descending even slowly without being able to see far enough ahead is a no go and dangerous with the quality of the road surface.

IMO there is no reason why these can't be used on the road safel safely.

The beam on the bike is different to what you see in the picture, that's just me holding the unit and taking a picture with the other hand. There is a guide in the instruction manual about setting it up for road use.

Looks impressive, but where do you put the battery? Is the lead long enough to reach the bottle cage?

There is an extension lead supplied which will reach your saddle bag/bottle cage if you so wish to use it. I just use it with the standard lead as seen in the picture and use the strap provided to secure the battery pack to the top tube.

The battery pack seems pretty well protected from the elements too so not essential hiding it away I would suggest.
