Hi Peeps,
Just wondering if anyone has or seen a Silver rated lightweight lock? I ask because as you might know I and the 2nd love of my life have been kicked out of the office into the car park. I bought a Kryptonite NY 3000 weighting 2kgs, little did I know just how much of a difference this would make with a rucksack already full when buying but it is taking its toll when trying to extend the number of commuting days. I thought about leaving at work but the chances are I will need it at home or about so I thought if there might be a lighter lock available?

Any ideas?

If you're talking about buying another lock anyway, you might as well keep the heavy one at work where your bike might be most at risk ? And buy a lightweight one for general use.

So back to your question about a lightweight lock, sorry I don't know of any !

Kryptonite do some good ones - I've got one of these and it's pretty solid for the price. Silver rated, I believe - I watched a video and it took a crim a good minute to break it and for me, that's pretty good if you leave it in a built up area considering the price. It's about a tenner more now than what I paid for it though, so look around because you can get it for about 24 quid.

It is about a kilo but it's weight worth carrying.

Panniers.

Don't ask me about the weight of a Fagh Mini and an Abus Bordo - very very heavy. I use them for site visits - have to carry them with me. If it's a permanent shelter/sheffield stand, I'd leave one lock on the stand !

Light and strong don't always go together for locks.

Buy 2 more, leave the present one at work locked to the stand, another in your desk drawer for when someone fills the first up with araldite, and the third at home for other times you need a lock.

Oh - and fit your bike with an alarm for when it's outside at work.

Then start negotiations at work for some secure bike parking!

Easiest solution is to buy another and leave one at home. You can pick up the Kryptonite New Yorks for around £40-£50 if you shop around.

The FAGH Mini is better
'cos you've had something stolen while locked with a Kryptonite but not the FAGH?

Seriously though, any of the decent mini's are much better than longer locks as long as it can accommodate a Sheffield stand and the wheel and frame tightly. Since using my mini magnum lock, I have kept a bike a whole two years, which is a record for this decade anyway!

Everyone who said keep one set of locks at work and one set for home is spot on though. Carrying 2 U-Locks, even in panniers is very noticeable.
