Lights problem, mate?

Riding down to pick up Chinese food on Friday evening, saw a bloke riding on the other side of the road holding against the handlebar what looked like a cateye light pointed forward. Thought he must have some problem with the bracket, I suppose it can happen, and maybe he didn't have far to get home.

As he passed I turned my head 'cos I was looking to turn right shortly, caught sight that with his other hand he was holding the rear light, pointing it backwards.

Amazing feat of balanced riding. Excellent looking lights, very visible. I can't help thinking he was doing SOMETHING wrong though

Now I know Cateyes have a reputation for poor brackets, but that's ridiculous!

Were there speed bumps or potholes on the road? My front cateye started falling off whenever I went down a road of gentle speed cushions. I finally gave up on it when it came off and fell apart.

But shouldn't a decent bracket actually come with the light? When I buy a light for a bike I expect it to be able to cope with a road bump, if it can't I'm not going to spend money on a replacement and an extra bracket.

Earlier in the year I skidded and hit the tarmac, the cateye (a different one) promptly broke while the hope vision 1 just stayed in position on the handlebar and didn't bat an eyelid. I forgave the cateye because of the accident and got another one, however this was a mistake because version 2 only lasted an month and an hour later I had ordered another hope.

maybe he has fat handel bars like me.. most lights' brackets wont fit my bike .. but thats a mean feat holding front and rear ones on.. show off!

You'd have thought he would have clipped the rear light onto a piece of clothing. No real need to worry about front lights imo.

Statistically a smidsy from in front is most likely, followed by someone overtaking and cutting in too soon. A rear end shunt is very rare.

Which is why I was a bit perplexed when I was overtaken this morning on a dimly lit street by someone who obviously cycled a lot but only had a rear light. I looked back just as he was passing and I'm sure there wasn't a front light.
