I get some kind of invitation to hook up with people all the time, but never respond.

Do these invitations come from the individuals, or do they, as I suspect, come from the companies running these services?

Is there any point?

They will tend to come from the person themselves. Whether there is a point or not is a different question. I use both the services mentioned, google+ for personal stuff and Linkedin for work networks

I use LinkedIn but doubt anything useful work will come of it- it's just a contacts list really.
I wouldn't waste any money paying for LinkedIn "Professional" as it's money for nothing.

If I don't know and trust the people who get in touch through it, I just ignore the contact.

The invitations come from individuals.

LinkedIn is like Facebook without the fun. It's 'potentially useful but dull, dull, dull. Google+ is potentially excellent and could displace Facebook and LinkedIn, but Google have still not quite worked out a good case for why people would use it rather than Facebook. Just not being Facebook is not good enough, especially if you try to impose unethical rules like having to use your real name on users... and Facebook thrives despite the evil intentions of its owners because it is fun and it works, and while Mark Zuckerberg may have no ethics at all, he knows how to give people what they want.

I had a facebook account for 2 years and I closed it last week. I started blocking activity for more and more friends until I had very little activity on the home page..... at that point I needed to make a decision, do I allow back a bunch of friends or close the account altogether. Although they are some good friends but I'm not interested in details of their lives and some people post what they are having for breakfast. Too much information I think. Also, after learning that my effort to protect my data had been wasted..... facebook has been sharing my information regardless of me never using / joining any of the apps on offer. In the end the decision was easy.

I know Facebook seems to generate invitations as 2 of my anti-facebook friends asked me if I had sent them invites to join FB claiming to come from me.

LinkedIn invites are from real people. Useful as a contact list but some planks warp in a more interesting manner.

You now have to have a Facebook account if you want to use Spotify.

Hope they don't backdate that otherwise it's bye bye spotify!
